Considering doing the Bike IAM Course

I passed my full licence about a year ago and have been commuting about 50 miles a day since then in all sorts of weather, both good and terrible.
However, my interest has piqued regarding the IAM, strangely after watching the Great North Run this morning and seeing the Motorcycle outriders and wondering how they ended up doing it.
Long story cut short... ended up at the IAM website and saw the details.
Question is, what sort of things would a biker get out of this? Is it much the same format as the car one that I see everyone talking about? How do problems such as communication get resolved?
I would ask if it were worth it, but I can guess the answer asking in here. ....

See if your local area runs a 'Bikesafe' course. It's a one day course teaching the Police method of riding and mine included around 100 miles of assessed riding. All for £10.......
I followed it up with a full weekends training on a 'Ride to Arrive' course.
I am going to do the IAM course next year.
Avon & Somerset are very good with these courses - which are also open to non-residents!!!

I have done both car and bike IAM courses, the theory behind both is the same, its the application thats different.
Most clubs do a 'pot luck' session once a month where you turn up and are randomly assigned an observer. Your first session should be free so its worth finding out if your local club do this.

Also interesting your comments on how close he was. I did some observer training and we were taught to ride pretty close to the associate.
To the OP - MC Bodge's thread shows the observers can vary but I highly recommend it. Just keep an open mind & enjoy!

+1. That was my experience too. Overall, however, I'd say my IAM bike was well worth the effort to complete: very rewarding. It increased my riding skill and enjoyment a lot.It's definitely worth doing www.BikeSafe.co.uk before or during IAM Skills for Life. Highly recommended and great fun!

You still got the XBR500?I've been riding one for the past 8 months and think its great; I'm knew to riding having only passed my DAS in Feb but the little XBR - although gutless when compared to modern stuf - is a real hoot.
I have a terrible misfire between 4k-5k rpm - real pain as it only revs to 6-7k.

No - been gone some years now. Really liked it - was my ride to work bike for quite a few years. Replaced with an SV650 in 2001 - god - it was that long ago!I've been riding one for the past 8 months and think its great; I'm knew to riding having only passed my DAS in Feb but the little XBR - although gutless when compared to modern stuf - is a real hoot.
