Middle lane hoggers
Discussion
this topic has probably been done to death but it really starting to become a problem for me.
i do a fair bit of motorway milage and constantly see this happening.
my normal method is a quick flash to let them know my presence, but 99% of the time they are actually CLUELESS when you pass you usually get the finger or some obscene gesture 'who does that asshole think he is flashing me' sort of behavior.
normally i will just overtake in lane 3 and move to lane 1 and proceed.
but on some occasions i have undertook (hangs head) not agressivley at all, i will flash in lane 1 first to let them know im there then if they dont i will proceed with vigilance.
ive only ever done this on a few occasions when lane 3 is already blocked by fast moving traffic.
how do you guys approach this situtation? how do you think the police would view this?
because they really dont seem to do anything about MLH.

There is not a 'no undertaking law'
If you are in lane 1 of a 3 lane mootorway with dopey in lane 2 then as long as you PASS SAFELY using lane 1 then no problem
I bet this gets some comments!!

Escpecially when all the other gormless mongs queue up in Lane 3 to overtake the MLM.
You can sail up the inside without chopping lanes and pass loads of cars.
I do it to the worse offenders. When I've been in lane 1 for minutes and come across a hog bimbling along in the middle, and can see miles of empty road in front I don't always move to lane 3 and back.
when I undetake middle laners I alway give a brief blip on my horn to them. Clearly they aren't aware of
whats going on, so its right I warn them of my presence.

I recently got an insight into these bimbling idiots. My brother in law is one, he honestly believes that it is safer to bimble along at 55 in the middle lane because if there is ever anything slower in the 1st lane, then pulling out to go round and back in again could risk him crashing
He has some other gems in his arsenal of crapisms, the favourite being to coast in neutral up to junctions, traffic lights, roundabouts etc from miles back in the belief that he is saving petrol. His kids spend the time lying flat to the seats as other drivers have a habit of passing whilst shaking fists, wker signs and hurling abuse at him.

The shame will subside. The vast majority of these people aren't mistakenly continuing down lane 2. I wouldn't flash them though; their behaviour can become unpredictable. Crack on and don't worry about it, just be glad that you're helping to ensure all the lanes we've paid for are being used and that you're reducing the congestion these people are hell bent on causing. There was an orange 3.2 TT doing it the other evening on the A1. I tried a number of safe and legal attempts to alert them of their stupidity. Nothing worked. One of my pet hates, its pretty much the only thing on the roads that makes me genuinely, blood-boilingly angry.

Conversation with some lady the other day at work: I was advised when driving on said road it was 'best to drive in the middle and don't exceed 70mph because there are so many speed cameras'
Piss went from 0 to boiling point pretty quickly. I bit my lip and walked away.
What's wrong with travelling in Lane 2 if Lane 3 is available for overtakers?Piss went from 0 to boiling point pretty quickly. I bit my lip and walked away.
I came up behind a transit van the other day sitting in the middle lane of the M40 at 60mph. I moved out and passed him, had a glance over at the driver and he had his right hand holding a phone to his ear and in his left hand he was eating what looked like a pasty. Amazing.
If I'm in lane 1 when I encounter these morons I'll make sure the hard shoulder is clear so I've got an escape route if they suddenly wake up and move left, and continue past them in L1. A horn "warning" or headlight flash is unlikely to be interpreted in the manner it was intended, if they notice it at all.
Day one at driving school: Drive on the left!

Previous threads on MLMs have discussed gently circling the offender (anticlockwise of course!)as a way of enlivening an otherwise boring stretch of motorway. Never tried it though.

Best solution in my view. If you can get past no benefit to anyone in getting involved in trying to get the other driver to move over. If he's actually blocking my progress then from a discreet distance I give a 2 second flash and hope for the best. But this would have to be after a good 20 -30 seconds of unnecessary following. If it works I acknowledge on passing. If not I just accept it and follow. I don't presume he hasn't seen and continue to flash as I don't want my communication to be misinterpreted as aggresive.rb5230 said:

Erm whats wrong with driving in lane 1 and doing the speed limit? lanes 2 and 3 are designated "overtaking lanes".
The problem arises often because different drivers choose different rules to comply with and disregard.
