Hi folks, I'm currently lurking around the TVR threads because I have an amazing wife that has given the green light to get myself one!

.........With one caveat (sensible one mind!) She wants me to go and do one of these driving experience days in whatever car I get. I have been googling and prices go from £150 up to over £1K!
Now I don't mind paying the money if I'm going to get the value for it, likewise, if anyone has done one of the cheaper courses and can recommend it, I'm all ears!

Any thoughts/opinions gratefully received.

It all depends what you're after - a day on an airfield will give you some experience of handling a car if you get into a situation that you shouldn't have.

Alternatively there are other types of courses that take a bit longer (but oddly, are much cheaper) that can make you a better driver all-round, and more able to exploit your new car safely.

Have a look at Ben Elliott Linky I did an airfield day with him and it was excellent. Trying to get another 2 in this year. Added bonus is that there is no noise limit at Alconbury which you may need to consider!

Have you already passed an advanced driving test?

I'd suggest starting with a run out with your local RoADAR / IAM group. Persevere with it and do, say 12 hours. Then decide whether to stick with that to the test or go for some other paid for training.

Sorry that was a bit of a vague post.
A bit of background on me, I'm 35, been driving for 18 yrs, I already have my IAM's and I'm a military driving instructor.
I've had motorbikes for the past 9 yrs and sold my last bike (ZX10R) last May. I currently drive a tuned Jaguar XFS with 305 bhp and 700nm torque.
I love my speed and spent the past 4 years tearing up the Autobahns in Germany, I've frequented the Nordschliefe a few times.
I am after training that will let me see the limits of the car, everyone keeps telling me how much of an animal the Tuscan is, so I would like to get the feel of when I'm being a bit too cocky. Also a bit of wet driving would be a bonus too, probably an airfield day would be better so there is plenty of run off!
I would prefer to have 1 on 1, but don't mind being part of a small group, say max 4.
There you go, that's probably what I should have said at the beginning.

Hi there,

How familiar are you with the High Performance Club ( www.HPC.org.uk )?

I'd highly recommend you start by asking one of the HPC gatekeepers for a day's training along the lines you suggested:

Have fun! smile

thumbup Edited to say that Cadence would be a brilliant place to make a first inquiry:

From your info I would say you might need some 'playing' to find out what it is capable of but I would not imagine that you need any specialist training etc for general road driving

Check out Colin Hoad, CAT Driver Training based at Millbrook. I have done their training days and Colin is a very special instructor. He is a 'Ring Meister and was trained by the one and only Dirk Schoysman.

So what you are after is limit handling skills and experience of your own car at the limit.

I vote for Andy Walsh of Car Limits - trains mainly at North Weald - or Don Palmer - trains mainly at Bruntingthorpe.

Don't know anything about Colin Hoad so not making any comparison with him. I have lots of admiration for the HPC gatekeepers (Hugh Noblett of Cadence and others) but I would go to them mainly for Roadcraft with a bit of limit handling, and to Andy or Don if the main requirement is limit handling.

Another good value option might be to start with an airfield track day.
