Tom TOM camera coverage
Discussion
Just got my Tom Tom 910 and fairly happy with it as a long term satnav user ( in car and portables). That said, this my first use of speed camera database as available on this unit. As a newbie I would be grateful for feedback on following questions:
How does the Tom Tom extra costs service rate relative to other offerings like those found on pocketgps world etc. Basic fixed cameras seem ok but does this database cover the more cunning scenarios such as SPECS etc. Mobile positions seem not covered? Is there better data out there.
Any informed feedback welcome.

I use the Pocket GPS world data base and find it very precise, and is updated about once a month, I pay £2 per download!
you can also download spoken voices and Speed camera capture so that if you find one that's not reported and you send them the file you get free life time subscription!

I have had a Morpheous Geodesy Plus for around 5 years and a TomTom One for a year. They routinely sit side by side along with a radar detector in my Range Rover - bit of an ECM suite! I was hoping to be able to ditch the Geodesy but the TomTom's camera database is so poor that I haven't been able to. TomTom's updates are very infrequent and even cameras that have been in situ for months are not always displayed.
It's a real shame as the TomTom One is superb. It's only by having two devices side by side that the frailties of one are truly exposed. Don't put your faith in the TomTom camera database to keep you safe.

To detect mobile camera positions you will need a detector that actually picks up the signal from the speed gun. The only trouble with this is that if yours is the first car on the scene they will have got you as your system picks up the signal so it is too late to slow down. If a car in front is zapped and your detector picks it up the you have a chance. Specs cameras should be picked up by GPS based systems but they do calculate your average speed to the next specs camera position - so remain within the limit to the 2nd camera.
Better still use the checkPOInt software/database. Its free, IME its always up to date, it even has the temporary roadworks speed cameras in the day they go up due to the ability to add cameras yourself then upload back to the database.
It has mobile hotspots and SPECS in too. You can just use the data file as POI's in TomTom or you can run the checkPOInt software at the same time as tomtom then it overlays info on tomtom if there is a camer about. ANd for specs it shows your average speed between the cameras ! Downside - the checkpoint software flashes a bit due to the refresh method used by tomtom. So I just use the database as tomtom POIs
Its only for PDA though.....

No you don't all Mobile camera locations are published on the web, these are on the data base!
