I think it personal preferance as to what you find easiest to use, see if you can borrow a few different ones off friends.

Personally i have a Navigon device (bluemedia PNA specifically) that i have used for a few years now and i cant fault it realy. Has a few excentricities, but has worked for me throughout UK, Ireland, France, BeNeLux, Germany and Scandinavia. However i am sure that times and technologies have moved on.

Only time it let me down was when we found ourselves trying to find a hotel next to the EEC offices in Brussels, on a 9/11 anniversary, the yanks were playing silly buggers with the satellites.

i've recently upgraded my Garmin i3 to a Garmin C510D and im well chuffed with it. Its got a disc with Europe on, and it does TMC traffic jam avoidance. Its also got a security thing. Was £199 at Halfords.

If you fancy one with a pocket PC (PDA) then the Navman PiN570 is excellent and only £140 from www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk

I'm very impressed with the Garmin nüvi 360 which I bought for £323 - including TMC receiver etc.

It also has a scamera database which you can update for free for the first 90 days - just connect to your PC and download from the Garmin website.
