having sold my old sat nav ( good old ebay ) I now need to decide which new one to buy....
my choices are:-

TomTom One V2 Europe coz:-
small - will fit in pocket when being used for touristy walking navigation.
cheap
BUT battery life is a bit crap

OR

Garmin Nuvi ( either 350/360 or 660 widescreen ) europe coz:-
smaller - will fit ...as above
great battery life
BUT
bit pricier
I've heard that the map update, on the move, is a bit jerky ( True yes/no )

please inundate me with your wisdom......

I've got a TTv2 - good little unit, but pissed off that it doesn't acknowledge the existence of a 2 year old bypass - thats crap TT!!

rolleyes

Due to the way it's collected, map data is inherently out of date... usually by 2-3 years.

I wouldn't blame TomTom so much... more TeleAtlas who provide the maps for them...

It's a navigational aid - if you know better, then ignore its instructions.

Must admit, I've not had my ear to the ground for a bit... only ever rated Navteq and TeleAtlas maps - others I've seen haven't been that good (but of course, things can change)

went to Halfwits today to look at the 2 units....the "expert" there told me that he would choose the Tomtom as they have yet to have one returned (?do we believe this!) yet they had had 2 Garmins back that week....

No experience of Tom Toms, but I'm really happy wuth my Nuvi. Two criticisms I would have of it are that it occasionally seems to prefer to take you on a 'country' route rather than a main road, if it deems it to be quicker or shorter. The other is that you can only insert one waypoint on any given route, though the unit can store up to 500.

Just bought the missus a Navman PiN570 PDA bundled Sat Nav for £140 for her birthday from Globalpositioningsystems.co.uk. It also comes with free Speed Camera Download from Pocketworldgps. yes She wanted a PDA - Pocket PC and she needs a Sat Nav - sense of direction is crap. Cracking deal as they were going for around £240ish! I have had the PiN300 for a couple of years now and the Sat Nav is great and I use the PDA every day for work - great package.

Only downside is that I've struggled to get the Speed Camera Database downloaded onto mine. Hoping the new one will be easier?

took the plunge and bought a Garmin nuvi 310D from Halfwits. I comes preloaded with speed camera locs and lots of POIs. Also has street level maps of europe on a DVD which I have downloaded to my SD card. Will post more experiences as ownership continues. Very positive so far and battery life is remarkable.
