Hi,
Looking at getting a Tom Tom as everyone I speak to says they are the best, however I'm hearing some views that the're no good in London. Does anyone have any experience of the best system for London driving?

Yes Officer, I can imagine how you'd react if you copped someone reading it while they were driving.

The biggest problem with London driving and sat navs is they don't know any of the good back routes. I use a Snooper Indago and if you turn off the zoom function for when you get near junctions it's great for seeing all the potential back routes when your stuck in traffic (it's pot luck as to which ones are one way though), but it'll never direct you down them. I don't think there is a satnav out there which can beat local knowledge though, especially when it comes to London. If you're talking about loosing the GPS signal because of the buildings then the snooper is great. Only time I loose the signal is in tunnels.

my TT1 works great in London though I dont know the roads I'm just happy to get to my destination without to much hassle.

I know other guys at work using other systems loose their sat signal sometimes, something to do with tall buildings, no such problems for the TT1

the ones with Surfistar III GPS such as the TT One and the Garmin nuvis cope much better in built-up areas....

Had my Tom Tom GO 510 for a week, hardly used it. Its bust and gone back to Tom Tom to be fixed. I hope that this isnt going to be a lemon.

My TomTom1, and most other satnavs give you the choice of either fastest or shortest route, shortest is the most direct and should take you the back roads, unless they are not on the shortest route!

My navman 520 is utter, utter sh*te in London. Whenever I try and drive into work (central London, aldgate area), for any of the surrounding roads including liverpool st it just says "no routable destination". Drives me mad, the whole point of getting the little bugger was for getting around town.

I've never heard of anyone who knows how to drive through London say that SatNav does better than they do, as there is so much more to it than just knowing the roads.

If you visit occasionally (like myself) they work OK, except for receptions blackspots, roadworks and of course the huge amount of traffic.
