New satnav: fastest ever?

Maxfield claims speed crown for portable device

none
Maxfield reckons that its new Max-Track portable satnav system is the fastest on the market.

Key features include a 400MHz processor, integrated GPS antenna and Max-Navigator 5 software which maps all of Western Europe, most of which can be loaded into the unit at any one time, according to the company (so why it sent us an example screen, right, that shows California is anyone's guess). Maps, which come pre-loaded onto a 1GB SD card, can be displayed either aligned to north or in the direction you're headed, and in either 2D or 3D depiction.

When route planning, you can customise it by blocking specific streets or indicating a preferred route. You can also save a personalised list of frequently used addresses, providing easy and quick access to regular destinations. Recent destinations are automatically available too.

Other features include a GPS-tuned speedo, which warns if you exceed the speed limit on a particular section of road.

Germany-based Maxfield said the 3.5-inch touch-screen display with a 320 x 240 pixel resolution was visible even in bright sunlight. Verbal directions are provided on the integrated stereo speakers or by attaching your own headphones. Presumably this means you can plug it into your car sound system although this wasn't clear.

The device runs Windows CE and is powered by a 2,200mA/hr lithium-ion battery and weighs 260 grammes.

Included in delivery are brief instruction sheets (a detailed manual can be found on the accompanying DVD-ROM), a 12-V charger that plugs into your automobile's cigarette lighter, a car kit holder, a 1 GB SD card with preinstalled navigation software and selected European countries and a PC-USB port SD card reader for customised installation of software and additional map material from the accompanying DVD-ROM.

I use a 633MHz Dell Aix x51v as my satnav. Does that mean I have the fastest satnav in the world?

How about if I used my core duo laptop as my satnav?

Stupid claim.

Just because it has a certain processor, does not make it "fast"…. I couldn't give a rat's ass about which chip it has - but how intuative the HMI is, and how quickly the software responds is far more important.

My Navman N60i has a 400MHz processor, 2GB Harddrive with full European maps and comes with TMC. It also has a nice big widescreen so you can actually see the maps too.
