Just spent a little time in Halfords today and rather liked the Garmin 310. They were selling a 310D version (claimed to be exclusive to them) which differs from the 310 by having the TMC bundle included along with European maps on an DVD and a free SD card to transfer selected elements to the unit.

1) how does this version compare with the 350?
2) does this look a good deal at £300
3) given that I want traffic, small size, good visuals, speedcameras and excellent reception (i.e. the latest chip set) does this seem a good option (I have discounted the Indigo with some regret due to the lack of traffic, the Navman due to the additional module for traffic and have not managed to see the MIO)

Thanks all

Miles, what kind of phone do you run? ( you'll see where im goin in a minute) I've got a garmin , and had an acer N35 PDA with full eu mappin etc etc. But as I have eluded to on another post ..got so fed up with havin to disconnect it all when i got to my destination ...and then worrying about some ned , breakin into the car and stealing it. Lets face it it doent take a genius to spot the "satNav" mount in a car...and even more obvious is that with the size of the units..its likely to be in the a) glove box b) under the driver seat c) in the boot

So back to my inital question....well if you have a symbian phone (Nokia N series N70 , N6880 etc etc0 you can put sat nav on that... they come pre loaded onto a mini SD card along with a GPS receiver about the size of a box of matches. it links to your phone via Bluetooth and ..well mines works a treat.its a N70 and Im running Navicore.

re your other posts similar to this... The maps are very acurate, get different view angles, night mode, different voice settings, different modes for cycling and walking, functions for parking (handy to find your car when in a strange city,,and to prevent you gettin a ticket) and best of all have free updates for traffic info and of speed camera..and it has the usual points of interest listing also.

works a treat

let me know how you get on....but personally I wouldnd buy a garmin or a Tomtom go unit for the reasons stated..too bulky. But no matter what system you do buy make sure you nark it up as yours with a anti theft kit.

Thanks for that - at the moment I want an acutal unit for the screen size however I can see that what you are suggesting is a very smart move and one to consider if (like you) the whole removal business becomes a pain.

On the size front I was very impressed by the Nuvi size - very pocketable and I do not intent to mount it on the windscreen so I will get around the whole cleaning the screen thing that you had issues with (where to sling the mount may still present some issues however I am lucky in that I have a lotus with no apparent storage space).

Thanks anyway - i will be looking into your idea with some interest I think.

Miles,

if your driving a lotis anything bigger will obscure your view..LOL

No honestly the navicore phone system is spot on very functional, screen size is honestly more than adequate and the voice commands/prompts are loud and clear and given in good time..quite simply if you can see you small dials you can read the navicore screen no probs..and as you will have seen from the price (£150 ish) you get your software on the mini sd card and the GPS unit) even if you had to buy a compatible phone it would probably still be less than the £300 some units are asking ...and obvioulsy a lot more fubctional...and the free upadtes (it downloads through the phones gprs connection when you request) is brill and alerts you to traffic jams / roadworks etc etc

As I said I have ditched both my PDA and a Garmin unit to use this system because it is so much more versatile and functional.

Good luck anyway with whatever you choose- just take your time and check them all out carefully for ergonomics, carrying, storage, update facilities, uasage and facilities they offer...bloody expensive mistake to make - as I have found out - twice!
