Thinking about selling my Origin B2 and getting Sat Nav with camera database built in. Obviously the Indago will do this job very well, but I wondered if anyone knows if the Tom Tom database is as good.

I don't rate the tomtom database as high as any of the companies who run dedicated units as that's their field of expertise so I'd go with the likes of Snooper or Road Angel for a combined unit. There are many threads on here about the topic so have a look and then go have a play at helfrauds or similar.

I use the Pocket GPS World database on my Tom Tom and my wife's Garmin. It doesn't seem to miss any fixed sites but has far too many mobile sites on it. I can turn them off on my Tom To but not the Garmin.

I have never used Road Angel or Origin but as I say I can't fault the fixed sites on the Pocket GPS database. It is about £2 one off or £19, (approx), for the year. I can't imagine there are that many more fixed sites going up so I would just pay the £2 fee for 1 month at a time and update every 3 months or so. Having said that £19 for the year is not going to break the bank!

At present the site says:

"There are a total of 10,278 cameras in the database. 3828 Gatso/Monitron/Truvelo, 5284 Mobiles, 30 Temporary, 153 Specs and 983 Redlight Cameras."

The Department for Transport would dissagree with you about not many cameras going up. I update my unit on a daily basis, the only time I would say it's safe to update on a quarterly basis is if you lived somewhere like north scotland. There's a reason there are people like PGPS and Drivesmart around offering cheap or free updates, because they rely on users telling them where cameras are. I'd still stick with a camera detector related mainstream company.
