Help!!! Setting up GPS device on TomTom one Pocket PC
Discussion
Hi,
I've got an Orange SPV M1000. Just purchased TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 software and Western Europe maps, and after several tries have now got the dammed software on and running.
Problem is I cannot get it to find my GPS device. I brought it from ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl
It came with no instructions, so I don't know which port it should be configured for in the TomTom GPS set up and I don't know what baud rate either.
I've checked the TomTom site - no luck.
Any ideas before I send the whole lot back and return to a paper map?
Cheers
John

Ok, after a day of investigation I've got it working.
There appears to really serious issues when using GPS on an Orange M1000.
Part of the reason is that Orange have messed with the ROM and created their own version with alimited a number of features.
The problem seems really bad with a Bluetooth GPS (only read this, not from personal experience). Some users appear to have no problems but others cannot get Bluetooth GPS to work at all. Some seem to think a ROM change is required but this will screw your TomTom codes and invalidate TomTom.
My problem concerned a wired GPS.
I've discovered that most wired GPS work on either 4800 (the old sat coms rate) or 9600. Most wired devices work on COM1 (found out after using a utility called WinFast Navigator for Pocket PC). Using WinFast I realised that COM1 didn't work.
This lead me to discover that the M1000 uses COM1 for infrared coms.
It turns out that you have to disable IR by using Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Beam, uncheck 'recieve all incoming beams'. Following this COM1 could be tested using WinFast, and upon changing to 9600 all the GPS data appeared.
So I set my GPS device in TomTOm to 9600 and Com1 wired and after two attempts it found GPS!!!
