I live at Le Mans and had friends here for the Le Mans Classic. I asked him if he needed advice when they left but he pointed to his PDA and said it would get him there. Interested I asked to see the route it took and nearly fell over laughing - it took him through the town which is a nightmare of roadworks for the new tramway and not even a route I would recommend when the roadworks are finished.

The icing on the cake though was the advice to take the A28 north to join the A88 to Caen. Surprised to hear of this new motorway, I looked it up on the internet and yes, it is listed - it opens finally in 2010!

I think I'll hold back a bit longer before buying one of these devices if that is the state of play.

It must have got him to you though. How did he manage that I wonder.

For my route to work, I take an easy journey mostly through quiet country roads but my Garmin tries to direct me through the nearest major town. I'm now a bit concerned about it getting me through Spain, or even to Portsmouth port

i agree that you shouldnt rely on satnav's they only give you quickest times in theory. funniest is when you know the quickest route then see how the satnav copes when you go your own way. lynxd67, how long have you had your car? worked for lynx until recently

But the beauty of Satnav is that you can hop in and it WILL get you to your destination. Indeed you would be a fool to pass up local knowledge from a friend or ignore what you know yourself to be a better route, but if you don't know where you are then they are a godsend - even just knowing what street you are on can be a bonus a lot of the time, for instance if you break down. To think they are the best navigational tool in the world and will always find the best route is to misunderstand them - As they are now available for £100 I cannot see a reason for not having one. I might use mine for navigation as little as twice a month, the rest of the time it doubles up by warning me about speed cameras.
