Absolutely great...navigated my way from the middle of Newcastle to Bristol the other day with no hitches at all....best £200 odd I have ever spent.

i'd second that - i love my TT-1 and i got it a few months ago and paid £240 - and think it is worth every penny of that, so £204 seems like a bargain.

Yes, and you can include 'landmarks' or places of interest...I just tend to use it for getting places as quickly as possible.

Wife has had tt2 then 3 on Axim, then 300, then 500.
Borrowed 500 for a couple of days & although OK hated the bulk, which doesn't
fit into a pocket or my laptop case.
So bought TT1 from Currys for £219 as we don't have a Link recently.
Behaves brilliantly just been Kent-Newcastle-Durham-Bromsgrove-Kent.
More than enough volume to hear in the 944, louder than a 500 I think.
I use a VisorBlade bluetooth unit for the hands free so don't use the TT1
but it has the facility if you want it.
Only mean thing is that the memory card is virtually full just with maps,
so to get speed cameras on it you need to upgrade 512Kb SD from Mymemory was
£18 & the case is extra. Oh & you don't get a mains charger but I don't find that
an issue.

gets better & better. Can you power it with the PC for when you want to copy files over to the card (or does one just use a card reader)?

Can do either, I used a card reader so duped the existing card when I upgraded then
for adding the speed camera overlays.

Glad to hear TomTom map updating has improved so much since April: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=263768&f=153&h=0
and February:
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=237011&f=153&h=0

I shall be visiting the TomTom site tomorrow to update my TT1 maps. Is the update free or do you have to pay?

I want to "hardwire" a TT1 in my car. Can I use an external ariel so that I dont need to mount the system on my windscreen?

It's difficult to hard wire a TT in. I wanted to do this but the car charger output is 5v, not 12v so it cant be hard wired to the car's 12v system. On my Jag X Type I fitted another cigarette lighter power socket in the end of a cubby hole on the far RH side of the dash & the TT1 is mounted to the air vent directly above it (using TT's alternate mount kit). Works great & you can only see a few inched of power cord.
I don't think you'll need an external GPS antenna it seems to find the satelites even when is far from the windscreen.

On a seperate note my TT1 has crashed three times since I got it at xmas. The symptoms are that it will not power up. This is fixed by doing a "hard re-boot" for which you need a pin or other sharp object. Stick this in the hole at the base of the unit & hold while pressing the 'on' button for 6 seconds. Take the pin out then release the button & all is well again. For this reason I always keep a safety pin in my car.
