I need help!!!

I know, probably a stupid question, recently purchased a hp ipaq 1450, tom tom already installed, installed activesync on the desk top so as they can talk to each other, this seems ok, but I need to transfer a route that has been sent to me via e-mail onto the pda, but I can't seem to save the route anywhere on the desk top and then download it to the pda, when i try and save the route on the desktop, it says that it has been saved, and if you look into where you saved it it actually shows it there, but when I go through activesync to transfer to the palm top and open up the file, it's not showing it.
Should i be saving it somewhere different or am I being a complete nerd.
