Didn't even know this forum was here

Ted sneaks in all sorts of wonderful stuff when you aren't looking!!!

There's some good reviews of stuff in the PH resources and they answer most of teh questions...

Anyway, real numptie question here. I've never owned or used any sat nav kit, apart from a trip in the States accompanied by "Neverlost" in a Hertz rental, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!

Being tempted by something like a Garmin I2, especially with the sort of price they are. Only need UK maps, but want something portable and, like me, real simple.

My numptie question is: do all these units show your speed? (And show it clearly enough?)

(Owning an ultra-reliable British is fine.... until the speedo gives up on the odd day, when the sun's out and the roads look good. Some back-up would be a useful addition and excuse to the bank manager...)

Not sure about 'all' systems, but I'm using TomTom5 on a PDA, and there is a speed display, but it is too small to be of any use as a check.

On my PDA, I have a separate piece of GPS software which does show speed in almost a full screen display, which is very clear, but.... the refresh rate is rather slow - it gets 'left behind'!

What do you want the speed display for? to provide a legal speedo in the absence of a 'normal' one?

Ta. Just want it as an additional feature, for a back up in the times when the TVR speedo is having a fit, and as a check on both my cars' speedo readings really.

Ah, so you can turn it "off" from its navigating mode, then, and it shows your speed? (All the blurb I can find doesn't tell you stuff like this!)

When it's in map mode you get the option to turn off the navigation (stops it trying to get you home) and it will display speed & flash up scameras etc if you have those loaded

The TomTom speed display does get larger if you turn off items such as estimated arrival time.

What I do is set the map to turn off the 3D display at a certain speed so you know when you have gone over it!
