Speed Camera detector & sat nav. HELP PLEASE
Discussion
In the last month I've managed to collect 6 points (do I get a toaster??) on a previously clean licence so feel it's probably a good time to invest in a scamera detector. I'm also in the market for a sat nav so was wondering if I could combine the two?
Now, I have borrowed a TomTom recently which had the speed camera stuff downloaded onto it but it didn't pick up all the cameras that I saw and was no use when it came to the police and their camera in a van unit that caught me. So what I'm wondering is this;
1)Are the laser ones any good at picking up mobile sites or do they just tell you too little too late?
2)Am I right to think there is a law change on its way when it comes to these?
3)Can anyone recommend any other SatNav systems that are good at picking up speed cameras and good at the satnav bit as well?
Please help me as i'm bored of giving the police my money

Law change will make radar and laser detection illegal, and laser jamming will become illegal as well.
I got a Snooper S4 having got 6 points in a day (although I know a man who got 9), as my experience with detectors was that they were OK if you only needed to lose about 10mph, else you were too close to kill the speed. The GPS based detectors can be set up to any radius / side of the road etc. Mine is at 300metres, which seems about right and speaks to me, a great feature as it is easy to ignore a winking light. It also detects radar and laser, albeit with another sensor. The updates include the cameras put in motorway roadworks and other semi-permenant ones. Cost is £5/month - cheaper than points!
Snooper have just bought out indago(?) which I believe does the SatNav bit as well.

Sat nav systems have speed camera subscription updates available. (pocketgpsworld.com)
I my view the laser detection devices are no good (i have one) the police tend not to zap you if they think you are well within the speed limit so you will not detect them, when you are thought to be over the speed limit they will zap you, then it will be too late and all the bleeping on the detector will tell you is that you have been caught.

Ive got the Road Angel Navigator.
IMO (as one or two disagree) its a good piece of kit (well, its OK for £400, put it that way). THe navigation is damned good, takes me, in general, on the route I would have taken anyway, the screen is AFAIK slightly bigger than the Tom Tom's (although can be a pig to see properly in strong sunlight) and the unit hasnt missed a speed camera site yet (not that I am aware of).
The bonus with the Navi is that it detects the cameras directionally, so if there is one on the other side of the road, pointing where youve just come from, it doesnt warn you about the camera (unless, of course, its a multi directional camera, then it does) as it doesnt need to, as opposed to the others (well, AFAIK the TTs at least) that just show the location of a camera site, but it will warn you no matter which way the camera is pointing, if that makes sense?
Laser jammers are not illegal at all and there is no legislation in place either.
The Defender2 for example acts as a garage door opener and parking sensor and is fully software upgardeable for new features and functions,This is such a cool product we did a group buy on these units.
I got turned off of the Laser pro park as its a hand soldered unit by some guys in Croatia,The build quality is very very poor,Here is a link to some pictures of the hand soldered head of the laser pro park.

The whole thing is very badly made and Its amazing how this kind of product can ever be sold in the UK.
There is also a test video of it failing miserably against the Atlanta speed laser(UK name Clear Tone) with major punch through:

Not sure if FF should be talking down someone else's product... on yet another thread on the same two...
I was just concerned that UKSPEEDTRAPS was again trying to rip people off,They keep saying how great products are and this is only because they are being paid to do so via the resellers or people advertising on there.
I hope people don't get suckered by that site as the info is very dubious that is posted on there.
Road Angel Navigator is a classic deception of UKSPEEDTRAPS,Telling everyone how great it is(Well Steve Warren would as he works for Road Angel!LOL) only for everyone to find out this is simply not the case.
laser pro park tests and pictures show how horrendously misleading UKSPEEDTRAPS is being again.

Perhaps I am one of the lucky ones, but Ive had very few problems with my RA Navigator, certainly since I downloaded the latest updates which have vastly improved the (previously bad) satellite lock. Now locks on in between 2 - 4 minutes. Funnily enough the sat lock when I was at Le Mans last weekend was brilliant. Would lock on almost the moment I switched the thing on (and FWIW, the Navi ran faultlessly in France with the Euro map SD card installed).
I have had one unit replaced by Blackspot a while back, but since then and the latest updates, I like it. Especially the directional cameras that you dont get (I believe) on the Tom Toms etc. Takes a while to get it set up with your preferences so the unit works the way you want it to, but after that its fine.
And no, I dont work for Blackspot

I agree. I have a RA Navigator and am very pleased with it. I have found that you can speed up the satellite locking by turning it off by the switch on the bottom and back on again. If it has been left with just the button on the front switched off the locking takes longer.

You guys need to desperately try another sat nav system as it will be like a step out of the stone age compared to a Road Angel Navigator.
I had mine for 2 weeks and that was more than enough!

I've got another Sat Nav in my 6 Series so I can compare. The benefit of the RAN is the camera database.
I am a fussy sod and I always have the very very latest technology in my car,I find that factory fitted Nav systems are always out of date the moment the car comes out as manufacturers use systems that were purchased etc a long time before the launch of a car.
I still 100% would never touch any Road Angel Navigation products simply because they are really crap and the Navigator still uses Co-pilot 5,And there is no way at all to upgrade it as Co-pilot launched the new version 6 ages ago.
Also the Road Angel Navigator's post code search is a real joke and they don't have true 7 digit post code searching like everyone else has.
When searching via post code it gives you a grid like area of possible roads in that area,But not the actual road you are looking for!.
Good NAVIGATION system hey?

Another friend of mine has a RAN and he says it does do 7-digit / full postcode search.
Yes it fools you into thinking its got 7 digit post code search but it then throws up an area around the post code you are looking for and not the exact street you want.
Really this is the poorest type of Navigation system I have ever seen.

Perhaps you are an "advanced used" and the RAN is in fact good enough for us mere normal users (the majority?). I have never encountered a problem with the post code search. Your comments are very negative and may have the result of turning someone off a product that would be good enough for them.

I am just giving my opinion and also look at the other people that have had the same problems with their units and are also not impressed by the system at all,I was glad I did not get ripped off and pay £599 for it as the price has now totally collapsed.
