I'm about to get one of these as a handset on a phone contract, but nobody at Telstra is able to tell me how it works . From what little they have told me I need to subscribe to their Sensis nav service, then download map info via gprs connection. Is this correct? Can't I just get the map data on a disc & copy it to a SD card for the pda?

PS I am in Perth WA so I have also posted this on the Australian page but thought I might get more info here?

Cheers

Tim

not sure how Telstra works - aren't they the mobile provider?

I have a 6510 in the UK (same but no camera).

I have the tomtom software loaded and it works fine.

The GPS system (inbuilt) talks directly to the satellites so I don't understand where Telstra are involved?

If you want the up to date traffic news then you will need a mobile account (plus SIM, etc) which includes GPRS.

Hope this helps,

Thanks x5x3, yes Telstra are the phone company, they offer the HP device as a handset on the 24 month contract.
Have only used GPS a couple of times (in the UK in my brother's XKR and briefly driving from Surfers to Brisbane in a hire car)so I'm a bit vague. If I have the device, and can load map info from a disc or something, then do I need to subscribe to a Satnav service?

As far as traffic info etc, don't forget I'm not in a civilised country like the UK, we don't even have RDS here!! In fact I'm yet to find out if routable maps are even available here, the biggest map co here has told me their products on disc are not vector based, they are working on prototypes

Well I got this pda/phone today, and am trying to figure out how to use it.
Apparently I have to subscribe to Sensis/whereis GPS system (@$150p/a) and the maps download as I am using it?

Still would like to find out if I can buy maps to load on a card?

Anyone? The people in the telstra shop knew even less about it than I did, even got it at a 30% discount as they couldn't figure out the price properly

I've had a look at pocketgpsworld, but haven't found the answers yet; with over 100 forums you need gps to find your way around their site!

So far quite UNimpressed with this device. Maybe it's yet another drawback of living here, can't find anywhere that sells maps for it, this Sensis subscription system is useless. Spends most of the time telling me "your directions are being downloaded from the server" then when I follow it's direction, for example "turn left" it then immediately says "if possible make a u-turn" followed by "your directions are being downloaded from the server" Aargh!!

Someone PLEASE tell me if this is the best I can expect from this? So far it is just a VERY clumsy phone, even making a simple call is SO much more difficult than my old Nokia.

The iPAQ 6515 runs Windows Mobile, so any Windows Mobile compatible navigation software that is available with Australian maps should work.

Any idea where I would find such a thing? The phone retailer knows absolutely nothing about the GPS system.

Map of Australia is available for TomTom:

www.tomtom.com/products/accessory.php?ID=170&Product=109&Category=&Context=1&Language=1

Howvere, for some reason, if you go to the Australian page on their website, it does not list the PDA/phone version, only the All-in-one systems.

I've heard it's possible to download "backup" copies of TomTom and maps, allegedly, if you know what I mean. Have you got a techie/geeky mate who could tell you how to do it?

I've had a look at the Tomtom site; I will have to go to their local distributer (a department store) and see if I can find someone who has any idea about Satnav (basically NO-ONE seems to have it here)
I also forwarded this to my brother (IT chap) but he is in England so doesn't face the same difficulties...
The Australia map on SD card seem expensive (170pounds or over $400) Is that what you would expect to pay for maps? Can I load this map onto my existing system or do I also need to but Tomtom satnav software?

Tim

eta: In the meantime I have given up trying to use it with the Sensis system; it sent me in completely the wrong direction yesterday for a trip across 1 suburb, then sent me around in circles. I then ignored it and drove to the address, when I was within a mile it finally started giving me correct directions. It is just totally useless.
