TomTom One - Honest opinions please
Discussion
They are bringing out a new range of Tom-tom supposedly on the 1st of April with the cheapest 510 model at around £350. Also supposedly with the camera database already installed which should be a saving of around £60.
Sorry this is not a direct answer to your question but I just thought it might be worth you checking out the new series before you made a decision.

Honest question? Honest answer - they are good. Not brilliant, but very good. Probably best portable satnav on the market today. Excellent combination of ease of use and facilities and this is clearly shown in its sales figures....
But, there are just as good ones out there. Personally I now have an AA Navigator. For the TMC and better spoken instructions, but I dont have a 3d display. You pays your money and you makes your choice. Its good, but it is not perfect - but then again none of its competitors are perfect either.... so dont worry.
For the money its a cracking bargain. New models are coming, but previous track records have shown that TomTom's release dates and the day that you can actuallyt buy one are very different. Stock issues are common at the beginning. Also, expect to pay high prices for the first ones - while the older ones get chucked out on the web for even lower prices. Do note though, not sure what the upgrade options are (if any), so it might be a case of sell the old one and buy a new one....

I asked myself the same question and could not decide which one to go for. At the moment it is only worth looking at the TT ONE or the 700.
The One is miles better than the 300 and the 500 and 700 are now the same price (in halford).
I made my decision based on what they both had going for them and what i needed. The 700 does have bluetooth for the phone, but i have already got a bluetooth headset so did not need that. It has a hard drive, which some reviews say is just one more thing to go wrong and it has maps of Europe, i do not go into Europe.
now the ONE has a better reception with a new chip that is going to be installed on the 510, 710 and 910. It is smaller too, cheaper, battery life is better than 2 hours as stated, and i actually like the fact that you plug the cable into the TT unit instead of the cradel, that way when you dont need to use the power cable it is not there.
In conclusion i do allot of miles a year, not as many as i used to but i have been very please with it. The POI's are very useful and it will automatically re-route you if you go wrong. The TT traffic is quite good too. I would say buy one!

Bought a TT one for me and the wife to share, and another for my father for christmas.
TT one is excellent and easy to use.
Binned the standard sucker mount and bought a brodit mount instead for both cars so swapping is easy.
I looked at the 700 but decided it wasnt worth the money.
one a down side, the TT one only comes with UK map installed. if you go to calais, you donot get any roads
I bought mine for £215. I was waiting for them to drop below £250, but alas it didnt happen

....not sure about the maths there......
But very interested in this. Looking to replace Bluemedia unit that keeps failing (so its going back). Been narrowing down to Garmin i3 (cheap and cheerful) or TomTom One. I'm very interested in having facility of USA mapping and this seems to favour Tom Tom route...
Be interested to hear from anyone who's tried that...??

You're not the only one - I bought a Bluemedia unit one Friday for a weekend trip, and found it such a naff cheap flimsy piece of kit, with an awful unintuitive interface! - it sent me on a massive detour to my destination! Then on Saturday it completely gave up the ghost leaving me lost in the middle of nowhere. Needless to say I returned it to the shop on Monday morning first thing and the ironic thing was there was an irate looking chap behind me in front of the que at the returns desk with.... you guessed it, a Bluemedia unit!
TT One now on order, fingers crossed its an improvement...

Garmin have some new products which might be of interest:

Some of the more expensive ones will have TMC too - worth a look? Nuvi is highly rated.
I got one last year after returning the flawed Road angel Navigator. Its perfect for the money, although the 1st SIM card fell over on me (I did get a replacement without any problems)I would recommend it. The size is great, with the aftermarket cradle, it can be fixed anywhere and its seems to direct me where I want to go. I got the 1month free traffic, using Bluetooth and the Mobile phone, which worked well. Consider this it has the same mapping software as all the more expensive Tom Tom's!!
Minuses...slightly iffy directions sometimes (see my post tom tom return journey). Also a bit cheeky charging so much for the genuine carry case and domestic charger.
Pluses...just about everything else. Very intuituve, very accurate, you can download the camera database when needed, lots of really well thought out stuff like speed sensitive volume, night colours, and fully customisable display depending on how much info you want. In fact, almost everything is customisable.
I am usually very critical on design but hats off to Tom Tom, it really is a fantastic piece of design and I am very pleased indeed with mine. Strongly recommended.

Well I was in Sainsburys last night and picked up the May edition ( thought it was still March.....) of Personal Computer World and they had a group test of 10 SATNAV units:
Bluemedia BM6380 - 2 stars
Evesham Navcam 7000 - 2 stars
Garmin i3 - 4 stars (recommended)
Magellan 300 - 3 stars
Medion PNA350 - 2 stars
Mio 268 - 3 stars
Navman ICN520 - 2 stars
Novogo A30 - 4 stars (recommended)
Viamichelin - 3 stars
TomTom One - 4 stars (Editors Choice)
Garmin was complimented on most aspects but ease of use was criticised. However reckoned to be good value for money (at £179!).
But Tom Tom One reckoned to be best all rounder with only criticism being cost of European maps and traffic info service.
So, I think its going to be a TomTom One for me, especially as I can get US maps ready for our Florida holiday as a simple plug in card!
Hope this info may help some others!

Buy through Quidco and get 2% back.
I wish someone had mentioned Quidco before I bought a TT One from Dixons 3 weeks ago! I had never heard of them. I did at least get the £20 off for spending > £250 :-)
sorry!
I was in similar position when I first heard about them!! Always check on deals with their merchants now. However, ensure that you follow procedure carefully otherwise you will miss out on discounts.
Cheers
Even though you've made your mind up, thought I would let you know I've done a review of the One here: http://pistonheads.com/reviews/review
I have a blaupunkt travel pilot that is a combined radio/satnav unit that came with my Citroen Dispatch taxi as an optional extra.I find it very frustrating to use. Its fine if you know exactly where abouts the street is that you want to find, but if you don't know the exact area the street is in it won't find it.ie: I was in liverpool and tried to set it to go to James St, but it wouldn't plot it and sent me to Saint James St instead, which is at least a mile away. Also if you try to put a postcode in, it won't always find it.
I have used a tomtom in london and found it superb, as I didnt have a clue where I was going , and it took me to the door of where I was going.

I 'need' good SatNav for work and have tried most. My choice is TomTom 1 or Becker Indianoplis for a fixed unit (the best). Have had a problem sourcing additional power lead, carry case and mounting bracket for TT1 tho, Halfrauds have been no help, but would not put me off getting another.
