Can you use them as a basic scrolling map that just follows your movements without the unit trying to direct your route? I think SatNav routes are basically bollox as they don't have local knowledge but a scrolling map would be useful.

You can browse a map (in normal 2d mode), zooming in and out as you wish. Although you will have to keep tapping the top right to centre the map on your position. Or, you can just use it as normal (3d mode) and not plan a route.

Ah, I'd want it to have my position auto-centered as I'm driving so I can see the roads that are coming up.

Then just use it as normal, in 3d mode. You are marked in the centre as an arrow, approaching roads are shown + named. Just don't enter a route.

That's what I do most of the time, as I know where I am going but use it for the Scamera alerts.

What I do too, however, I have found with my TT5 that if you put a route in I get the traffic updates and get audible warnings for scamra's rather than just an icon appearing on the screen.

You need to adjust the POI settings so that the alerts come up even if not on your route

If you go to manage POI you can change the settings so that it warns you if a camera is approaching & you can set the distance you wish warning to sound at & also what noise you want to warn you. You can also choose whether to warn you only if camera is on your route or not
