Over the weekend Mrs Tree went to an event at Excel in Docklands. Whilst inside and dispite security guards WITH dogs patrolling, 5 cars including her's were broken into to grab satnav systems. The satnav was in the glove box, but the window suction cradle was still attached.
Ok she should have removed that as well in hindsight, but that a bit late now.
Talk about make a mess with broken glass, side windows shatterd into thousands of tiny pieces

Moral of the story is REMOVE cradles from the screens as well as the PDA when leaving you car for long periods of time.

Yep

Please remove the craddle
We all know how lazy drivers are with the stereo frontice so whats different with a bulkier sat nav? NOWT!

Thieves are shits but not thick!

They even broke into an ambulance in York, on a job, and stole their sat nav!

I know what you mean, i was thinking about this when i purchased mine the other day. I went for the ONE so that i can put it in its neat case then put it in my bag, therefore with me when i leave the car, the size of the ONE does make it a major advantage.

But yes, for all of 10 seconds to remove the bracket you might as well.

Have even heard of cars being broken into when no satnav or mounting arm in sight.
They look for the tell-tale ring where the suction cup has been on the screen.

But if you spend time removing face-plate, hiding sat-nav, removing sucker crable and tell-tale suction mark, that's quite a lot of time spent, especially as you need to refit it all again before going home. Obviously if you're in an area you don't know so well, it's always best to stash the kit away. But you can't spend your life in fear (although it would appear the government would prefer that to decent policing at times), wasting so much time pfaffing in the car just to stop it looking more of a target, when the act of doing that could draw attention to the fact you're hiding the kit in the first place.

I had a car of mine smashed into five years back just to see what they could get, they left without the stereo, but found a mini maglite in a cubby hole and boxed, unfitted CD changer in the boot out of sight (doh!) and went off with that the sods. The moral being if its your time and your luck is out, you can get back to the car to see a smashed side window at any time.

City sat nav thefts up by 2,000%

Thefts of satellite navigation systems from vehicles in Sheffield have increased by 2,000% in 12 months.

Police said there had been a "huge leap" in the number of thefts as drivers ignored repeated warnings not to leave the devices on show.

Det Supt John Parr said more than 300 systems had been stolen from vehicles in Sheffield this year, compared with seven during the same period in 2005.

"If you leave your sat nav device on display you will get it stolen."

So far this year the overall number of thefts from a vehicle in Sheffield has risen by 48%, from 4,245 offences to 8,165.

South Yorkshire Police said it was trying to combat the problem, by leaving bogus vehicles parked in crime hot spots, and several arrests had been made.

Absolutely

No charges to be pressed though, excuse given is that he is 15.

Oh well.

Rather than buy the TomTom I just did I might as well do a smash and grab as well. Great message it sends out to people doesn't it. Even if you catch them yourself they won't do anything.

That's why I take my unit out of the cradle and put it in my jacket pocket and take it with me. If they break in they're not getting anything electronic that I've had to pay for.

Can't understand why you'd put anything into a glove compartment anyway, whatever it is is still in the car, so if its broken into, they're going to get it, or at least have a crack at it.

Get yourself a sticker saying that no sat-nav or tools are left in the car overnight - then leave it in the glove compartment anyway.

isn't this entrapment or something? I'm all for catching thieves and think it's great idea, just surprised in this wishy washy day that the police can do such a thing?

Same thing happened to me when I left the cradle in the window of my company car.

Of course I wasn't stupid enough to leave the Sat Nav in the car so the scrotes decided to smash several of the windows for revenge and took my cradle anyway.

Now I religiously remove it from view which can be a pain in the arse if I am just popping in the shops for a couple of Min's....but once bitten and all that.
