I recently acquired a Tom Tom One and have added the latest pocketgpsworld.com database. Now being of an inquisitive nature and a technical background I set of of on a journey yesterday with the Tom Tom and my trusty RoadAngel both hooked up in my car.

The Tom Tom and RA disagreed on some of the overhead gantry camera positions on the M42 and also on the M25. The Tom Tom flagged temporary cameras sites (I know RA refuse to add these as a matter of policy).

Anybody else had any similar experiences? I tend to trust my RA more at the moment as I have been using it for some years without any major issues.

Let the debate begin (or continue).

Done the same test and found lots of scamera sites (mobile) on the PocketGPS database which are just not present on the RA.
I like the PocketGPS database and accuracy isn't bad but I prefer the way the RA warns you.
Personally I'm leaning more towards the Pocket GPS database because I'd rather receive the warning that a scamera *might* be up ahead, whereas the RA you may have to enter the scamera site as a personal site because their database has less sites.

However I'm keeping both, the RA goes in the company car which already has Sat Nav and the Pocket GPS/Sat Nav PDA is for the other cars.
I also prefer the method of warning in the RA even comparing it to the PDA ith a voice set-up

PP,
Like you I have just acquired a TT1 and today I had the opportunity to compare it with my RA Classic on a return journey Aberdeen/Dundee on my least favourite road, the A90, which (in Scottish terms at least) is speed trap zoo. (see www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=242613&f=118&h=0)

I agree with you and 993T. The RA gives fewer alerts, but that's by design, as they don't include "temporary" sites unless active (makes you download the latest info), and the alerts are vectored (I mean they only alert you to cameras in the direction you are heading).

My conclusion is that like 993T I will use both. It's nice to know from the gpsworld database where cameras are known to lurk (and so beware) rather than rely on your latest RA download being 100% accurate. However the RA's vectoral (sense of directional) ability is superior, as is its warning countdown and red flashing screen.

I tried setting the TT to only alert if the cameras were "on route" which silenced some of the alerts from cameras facing the opposite direction, however not all.

Both systems are pretty good, and certainly made my journey the least stressful of any I've had up that road since the speed cameras were installed. I would emphasise that this is not because I drive up that road at mad speeds, but because the existence of the cameras is very distracting.

Speed cameras force you to check your speedometer rather than look at the road and other traffic, and they also cause violent braking manouvres when people see them too late and brake hard because when they're not sure of what the limit is (and judging by most of the driving I've seen on that road people think the limit on a dual carriageway is 60 not 70) then braking will stop them getting flashed (even if it does cause all the traffic behind to take avoiding action which would be unnecessary without the existence of these vile devices).

Death to cash cameras. Buy a camera detector for safety's sake.

I've been running the pocketgpsworld database on Tomtom Navigator 5 on my Ipaq alongside my RA2 for a month now. I'm now convinced of the accuracy of the pocketgps database so the RA2 is off to eBay.

The number of people I've argued with about this amazes me, some even considered themselves to be advanced and knowledgeable drivers

I've eBayed my RA2 now I'm using the PocketGPSWorld database on Garmin i3, a few annoyances, such as the lack of direction, but it doesn't warn of cameras that aren't on the road you are; which the RA2 did and has the mobile sites as mentioned already.
