I spent quite a bit of time on here and for a well respected, out-of-the box usable model, Tom Tom 300 came up as a very good option. My father is looking for something not super complex, so with the fact that it is relatively easy to either subscribe to additional services or download various databases, I am confident I have gone in the right direction with it. Some thoughts

- budget; TT 300 is app £290-£300 currently
- "extra" services; do you need speed camera detection, traffic jam warnings etc?
- scope of use; is unit to be used in Europe as well as TT300 limited in this respect.

Best of luck - good deals on the unit at present at Comet/Halfords etc.

Yup Tomtom go. Bought one for my dad this year and he gets on fine with it. Amazing considering that he still can't use a fax machine.
