I've been enjoying driving my Z4M over the past week or so but bluetooth is so old I can't work out how to connect an iPhone, it doesn't have DAB, the pop up screen and interface is so ste and the headunit itself has no screen, it's started to annoy me in a way it never really did when I just used it for the odd sunny blast.

So looking at replacing the standard crappy headunit with a single DIN with a motorised screen and Apple CarPlay built in.

So many to choose from, from sub-£200 to £600 for a Pioneer thing.

I only need to be able to play some music, answer the phone and occasionally use Waze.

Happy with s cheap Chinese thing if it works, I'd need a wiring harness and a fascia adapter plate I assume. It only has standard audio, no subs and amps, which should make it easier.

Any help appreciated.

Got my eye on this one, the screen doesn't necessarily need to be motorised if it can stay like this...

Nice option, gives you more than CarPlay with it being a phone holder but harder to use on the move

I shall give an unknowledgeable reply....

Perhaps another option is to get a decent simple single-DIN bluetooth headunit such as one of the retro looking Blaupunkt ones and then just using your phone as the screen.

As Davidd did above, however, that doesn't give you Apple CarPlay.

Totally get where you’re coming from, stock head-units on older cars are often painfully outdated. A single-DIN head unit with a flip-out screen + Apple CarPlay sounds like a great upgrade for music, calls, and Waze. If you don’t have extra amps or a complicated audio setup, you’re right: a basic wiring harness and fascia plate should be enough. I’d say go for something mid-range, not the cheapest crap, but also don’t overpay if you only need the basics. And don’t be shy with the cheap Chinese ones, as long as they’ve good reviews and support for iPhone/CarPlay.

This is the one I went with in the end. Fascia adapter and wiring harness have arrived now too so I’ll have a crack at it at the weekend. Base stereo in the Z4 is woeful so I may end up with amp/front speakers at some point just to make it audible with the roof down.
