My TomTom500 Go wont switch on. It got us to a location in shoreham yesterday, and just wouldnt turn on when we were ready to go home.

Green charge light shows when its plugged in. Doesnt show when its unplugged. But the unit wont switch on whether plugged in or unplugged.

Any ideas, other than taking it back?

One more thing - when reading reviews, I stumbled upon text somewhere, saying something to the effect of:

"Some chap had a TomTom, it broke 4 times. He lost his rag when it broke the 5th time (iirc) and the delivery/parcel bloke agreed that he took a lot of units back to the manufacturer) (or close)

I bought it just under a month ago. Would halfrauds likely attempt to send it back for repair, or give me a new one?

Update - the chap at hallfrauds said the TomTom 500's needed to be reset every once in a while, and that he had to do the same thing with his Navman. Under the tom tom is a small reset button which reboots the machine - leaving you with all your recent destinations still in the memory (so no harm done resetting it). Its working fine now

I've never had to do that with my TT Classic. But my daughter has that now as, for various reasons, she could not easily operate the mount release on the 500 and the 500 does not fit on the old screen mount (but the classic will fit on either.) and I didn't like the look of swapping the mounts on the arms because they seemed to be of different sizes.

I will check the 500 now I have it and wait for a required reset.

The personal settings are all held on a file written to the SD card so unless the SD card becomes corrupt or the file gets screwed by running out of space when writing to it you should not lose anything. I copied my old file off the Classic and onto the 500 when we swapped them over. All my personal setting work fine afaict.

So if you take a backup - as recommended in the user gide - al should be recoverable anyway.

No, this thread was just for me. Clearing some cobwebs, talking to myself then again if I help only one 500Go user, my post would not have been in vain, and obviously I'll be sleeping all the better at nights

Ahhharrr! Nice one. I didnt think to look for a reset switch (its easy enough to miss, due to its size). Well done Its a fantastic unit, I wouldnt want to be without it!

Cheers mate

The system does have its bugs, updated maps would be very welcome(!) and I still need to find the time to check out the downloadable voices.

Are downloadable voices free - I saw one site where they wern't. Can you email them to people? And can you send people the latest maps on CD? (are my only questions)

The official Tom Tom celebrity voices are something to do with thier 'for fee' "Plus" services iirc. Not sure if anyone else has hacked the system to make their own.

As for the maps, as far as I am aware the 300/500/700 machines were launched with the latest maps available - though that does not mean they are accurate. There are some differences between the latest maps and the original ones. Liberating new issues to work with older devices is something I have not yet tried.

The standard maps are SHITE!!

If you'd asked me last week, Id have said an update would have been welcome. Took us nearly 2 hours to do a 1 hour journey, whilst "traveling through fields" and being taken to dead end roads...

Great unit, wouldnt change it for anything (better the devil you know etc) and I love it to bits, but its far from perfect.

What do you mean "for free" - are the celeb voices downloadable free, or do you have to pay for em? I think podie gave me a link but ive not had time to check it out yet (lame excuse since I asked weeks ago, will try to read up on it tonight)

If you look on here :- www.mytomtomgo.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27 you'll see that using the 'reset' button on the TTG unit's is not unknown.

You don't lose any data or favorites etc when doing it and it appears to cure most lock ups / refuse to power ons.

Just had a scare myself but magic 'reset' solved it

Time for TT to hire decent kernel programmers???
