What do you see as the purpose of having a dashcam?

One simple purpose. Evidence in the event of any form of incident on the roads.

So far has proved useful once.

Eejit in an A3 performed an undertake of Mrs Magnum a few years ago as she was preparing to turn right. Eejit then cut in front of her and slammed on - clear 'cash for crash'. Of course, he claimed that she'd just driven in to the back of him.... Dashcam footage proved him to be a lying sack of st, and claim went against him. Without the camera, claim would have gone very differently.

Evidence in the event of an accident / incident.

Over the years, my dash cams have already helped my with a number of claims made against me that were no-fault in the end.

Reminds me I must get one for my daughter's car for just such an occasion...

In some respects they would be more useful to insurers than black-boxes I imagine.

This is their primary function.

What happens when they’re on social media?

I have mine (front and rear) exclusively to protect me in the event of an insurance claim where it's not my fault. Touch wood I haven't needed it yet.

While I am amused by the various 'crap driving' threads and videos, I can't understand the mentality of sending footage of minor transgressions to the police. For one thing my driving is not always squeaky clean and I wouldn't want any such footage to come back to bite me, aside from the fact that it's just a knobbish thing to do.

Mine is primarily for the event of collisions, although any particularly tttish driving may result in the offenders being stuck on.

Just a word to the wise of those who are in the ‘just in case’ camp…check footage is recorded and format the SD card periodically, these have a habit of freezing when you don’t want them to, so the one time you need it, it’s not there!

As most of the above - evidence in the event of an incident - has been useful once, and could have been useful another time if it wasn't still sat in my garage waiting to be put in the car (would have been really useful that time as we had someone reverse into our stationary car then claim we were moving forward, but got resolved thanks to some witnesses).

I guess if I saw some cataclysmically bad driving I could use it to report to the police - but in the over 10 years I've had it nothing has breached that relatively high threshold. Nothing would go on Youtube or similar.

Evidence.

I like the fact that one of them also has a really bright light. It's so noticeable that I see peds looking at the camera when I drive by. If it makes other drivers take a bit more care with what they do knowing that they're on camera, then great.

Both me and my partner have them, they go on at the start of the journey and get forgotten about. Both are hard wired in and tucked behind the mirror so you don't see them.

I found mine has come in handy once to help a chap who was in a hut and run, all captured on my camera.

That's the only reason we have them is as a witness in case someone does something stupid. Many people end up in a situation where someone does something stupid, admits it at the time then retracts it when they come to actually speak with insurance.

I dont have one, an dont have much desire for one.

However it would potentially have been nice to have a rear facing one when some berk rear ended me on the M63 a month ago. That said it was dark so not sure I would have got a plate reading out of it anyway?

I have front and rear dashcams, and I insist the family do too. It seems every time I go out in the car I see something which could be reportable, yesterday it was 2 drivers going the wrong side of a keep left sign, and today a BMW nearly running someone over on a zebra crossing. I don't think the message that there are cameras bloody everywhere is getting through, I am very careful about how I drive in case someone behind has a camera.

And do you report these instances?
