Basic dashcam for the uninterested
Discussion
The missus has just had an accident here a van has reversed into her while she was stationary. Buggered the bonnet and bumper and some pipework.
Trying to sort out the insurance and it would be much easier if we had a dashcam to show that she was stopped at the time. Obviously too late now, but for future possible incidents, what do i need to look for in a dashcam?
I won't be aiming to put footage onto "Britain's Worst Drivers" on Youtube, or trying to do videos of jaunts over the moors, it is simply to have some evidence if another accident happens.
Prices seem to vary wildly from £25 up to £250, but i don't know what spec i should be looking for.

Make sure whatever dash cam you purchase, ensure that you can hard wire it into the car.

Hi
Nextbase 322GW
In my opinion - they're in all of my vehicles - rear as well in some cases.
It's HD - enough definition
GPS for accurate location
The date and time is GPS based so is always accurate
Has speed stamp
Any lower model doesn't have GPS - location marking
Any higher is more expensive and mostly bells and whistles
Hope this helps
This https://www.amazon.co.uk/BESTSEE-DashCam-Parking-G... as a cheap "fit and forget" unobtrusive dashcam? Fairly decent reviews too.
It's interesting to see all of the recommendations for Nextbase here.
I've had a 622GW for two years and it's useless. It started to freeze up and Nextbase advice was to buy one of their own SD cards. I did that and it started freezing up in the summer only. Nextbase advised 'not to use it in direct sunlight'!!!
The image quality is good and the app interface is adequate, but I've lost count of the times that I've glanced up at the screen to find it's not recording which rather defeats the object of having one, particularly as you can't just restart it easily if it's failed.
There are hundreds of similar reviews and complaints online, but positive experiences here suggest that good ones must exist.
I wonder if I made a mistake going for the 622 rather than one of the more basic models.

I've had / got several versions from the 122 ? up to the one you are mentioning.
That's why I suggested the 322 because the higher spec ones have bee the most problematic.
My 522 was a waste of money - the 322's and 222's do seem to work very well.

Thanks, definitely good to hear that experience from someone who has tried different models in the range.I've had / got several versions from the 122 ? up to the one you are mentioning.

I’ve just ordered a 322 to try it out whilst we still have some hot weather to see if it can manage where the 622 fails.
It’s £99 on Amazon which is much closer to the cheaper brands I’ve seen recommended, but will be compatible with the mount, hardwire kit, SD card and clip-in rear camera that I’m already using with the 622.
The clip-in rear camera actually works really well in my car and was one of the reasons I went for the Nextbase to start with. Some people seem to blame that for the overheating on the 622, so will be interesting to see what happens.

I can't seem to get the 322GW working properly, the footage is too jerky and fuzzy to read number plates unless there is no movement in either my car or the one I'm looking at - not ideal!
I've used the same SD card, so have deleted all of the old footage from the 622GW, but managed to find a couple of them saved in the app and they are much better.
Can anyone suggest anything I can try? I was thinking about trying to move up from 1080/30 to 1080/60 to see if that improves things, but this will mean I can't use the rear cam, which was the reason I was keen to stay with Nextbase.
I turned on my 622GW and noticed that I have it set to 4K/30 anyway, so am guessing that the difference in frame rate is not my issue. The 622GW also includes an image stabilisation function, but I had this switched off anyway.
If I can't resolve, I might try another 322GW as I might just have a bad one I suppose.

That's where your experience mirrors mine.
Once I added a clip in rear camera it just wouldn't work after a while.
It froze, and no matter of attempted resets and hard resets it was just an ineffective paper weight even.
I've got a few 322's going , just front facing and they've been good.

Why are rear cameras needed
Rear cameras in general, or specifically these clip-in ones?I’ve only used a dash cam for two years, and the nearest I’ve come to actually needing to view the footage from it was when someone nearly swiped into my rear wing after dangerously weaving in and out of lanes on the motorway. The rear camera would have caught all of the build up to that potential incident.
The clip-in rear camera is definitely not as good as having a camera in the rear screen, but is a reasonable substitute in a small car.

I use a 222 or 322 as a rear, and don't bother with the dedicated rears or clip on ones.
I think that’s what I’ll end up doing..I’ll keep the 622 with clip in for my occasional use car, and put 2 x 322s in the daily. That’s much bigger car so the clip in one will struggle anyway.Next take is to test the current 322 without the rear cam to see if that improves the image.

I bought a car with a usb cable sticking out by the rear view mirror, so I purchased a dashcam to plug it into. I set the camera up to monitor things while parked, and it flattened the car battery over the course of three days or so.
That can't be right, surely?
What camera is it?That can't be right, surely?
I’ve got my Nextbase hardwired to a permanently live feed and it has never flattened the battery, BUT the parking mode is reportedly fairly useless on these, and hardly ever activates.
If you’ve got a camera that doesn’t shut off and records all the time, I would have thought it would flatten the battery fairly quickly.

It was a cheapo Navycrest off Amazon, but it's in the bin now.
I have a 622 and 322, both hard-wired (fitted through Nextbase). The 622 also has a wired rear-view module.
I think they are both good, the image on the 622 is much higher res. I use Sandisk Max Endurance cards, same as for home security cameras.
After a couple of years, the battery life does drop off considerably, if you’re not thinking of hard-wiring
