Running out of things to try with my (no-name, dead cheap, non-CarPlay) android head unit.

It all works ok out of the box, with the exception of receiving data.

I've been able to connect with wifi from the house, by putting a mesh extender onto an extension cable and placing it inside the cabin - but otherwise it won't find an internet connection even with full signal on my phone. Anyway, that's enabled me to download a few apps (Waze, TuneIn, DAB-Z).

I tried setting up the hotspot with 2.4GHz encryped connection and with an open connection, made no difference.

I changed the device type in my phone bluetooth settings from "car stereo" and setting device type to "headphones" or "speaker" in the phone. This allows the hotspot to connect, but can't get data.

The phone info says there's no SIM restrictions, so presumably no provider-based blocking of the use of the phone to transfer data to another device. I'm with GiffGaff on O2.

At this point I'm out of spit - I can't find any other setting to try either on iphone or head unit.

Anyone had similar and sorted it?

Oh incidentally I have 2 other issues with the head unit:
1) despite requesting the hotspot is always on if the head unit is, it needs to be manually switched on every time it turns on (even checked as soon as the head unit boots - it's not like it's switching off after a few minutes of not finding a hotspot to connect to)
2) I have a DAB dongle which is connected through an aux lead in the back of the head unit that's bundled with some phono leads - I read that if it's connected to any USB port that's connected to the head unit it'll work, but I am not getting any stations - should I simply try another set of connection leads in a different plug in the head unit, or have I got a duff DAB dongle, or...? I know the aerial is ok as before I got this head unit I had a Pure Highway fitted that received DAB signals no problem.

TBH if I can get the hotspot to transmit data I can do without the DAB dongle working, galling as it is to spend £50 on a dongle and aerial, but at the moment I've got neither DAB nor streamed radio, and analogue radio is bloody awful!!
