I never thought I would see the day, following a few recent near misses I am in the market for a dashcam for the family car, has anyone experience with these things? My ideal setup would involve both front and rear cameras, be compact and inconspiuous with no LCD screens, and one that continues to record for a short while after the vehicle is parked. Any advide helping me navigate appriciated.

I have the Garmin mini

Works well

I've had good results with the ddpai mini range in various vehicles. I also like the Bluetooth remote feature for capturing 30sec snapshots when I need to.

I also recommend fitting a separate camera front and rear.

I've recently had a Thinkware F70 Pro installed and so far i rate it. Wouldn't know it was there from the drivers seat, it has few bells and whistles but it reliably records what it's pointing at, has a parking mode, and comes with a built in speed camera warning.

I have had expensive and cheap dashcams.

After buying a cheap Iiwey dash cam for my sons car last year and been really impressed with it I now have their dashcams in all 4 cars, latest being the EY05 - brilliant value for money, also have a JO1 and JO1 Pro

Iiwey available from Amazon

I've been running a Viofo for the last 13 years or so and it's been faultless. It does have a screen but the overall form factor is tiny and unobtrusive. Motion detection or time lapse (low frame rate) parking recording can be turned on and off with a few button presses and will still record if the car is bumped even if one of these is not set up - dependent on hardwiring to both ignition and a permanent live source.
Viofos power supply will disconnect if it detects that the cars battery is being excessively discharged. Several versions are available depending on your requirements.

Looks like this - to the left of the mirror.
