I have Satnav on my Toyota (Toyota own system) but since its 4 years old I have to buy a new disk (the current one sends me the wrong way done new one-way streets and only covers the UK). New UK disk is about £80 and that can buy a lot of "real" maps including European coverage.

Quite. I've just bought a 3 y/o Discovery with a Becker satnav system, which apart from the User Interface from Hell, has a 3 y/o disk in it. Land Rover want £90 for a new one, which buys a shedload of maps with enough left over for a beer and curry.

I'm deadly serious about purchasing one of the above publications and was seeking possible advice as to which was the better option; I would appreciate it if you kept quiet if you have nothing to contribute.
Thankyou to the other two gentlemen - I feel as you do that the price of fancy satellite based gadgetry is rather steep and am looking to purchase a map (which I believe have been successfully used to navigate for some time) as I will be doing a Lands End to John O Groats trip in a weeks time. I already have a compass.

As Pals4 said the relative costs and usefulness of a decent road atlas versus a GPS system is a good question and needs to be considered - luckily due to this thread a kind Pistonheader as offered to lend me his hardback edition of the AA road atlas for my trip to John O Groats. I shall write a post as to how I find the ease of use - especially the speed camera warnings that are included and possibly useful to us 'enthusiastic drivers'; look out for my next thead 'SatNav systems - are they worth it?'.

As a map and navigation freak my views are:-
1. Have taken a look at the AA scam map in relation to my patch and known scam sites. Verdict:- Take the info on the AA map with a large pinch of sodium chloride unless you want to use it to pick routes which may have a lower scam frequency, but prepare to be surprised. This view may or may not the typical of the rest of the country and local knowledge is everything.
Otherwise the map is nothing special.
2. Never go anywhere without Philips Navigator atlas
Only way to get anything better is to buy the complete set of Landranger maps. The beauty is that you have small scale maps for overall planning, and the local maps are at about 1-1/2 miles / inch ie almost OS scale, and shows many local lanes and tracks so you have vv good local knowledge.
Drawback is that it is a big format 11" wide by 15" tall x 380 pages.
The above link sends you to Amazon who have it on sale for 13.99, the reader review is a very good summary. Atlas a lot better now they have sorted out the road colours for the benefit of those of us brought up with OS maps.
For me no other choice for road atlas.

You'll all be relieved to know we made it to John O Groats and back without getting lost once with use of the AA Roadmap for the Scottish leg and a trusy free 1998 Castrol Road Atlas which was found in the glovebox for my part.
SatNav? Pft.
