Tom Tom Nav on Pocket PC problem

I've had my Pocket PC for a few years now and similarly my Tom Tom Navigator software. I started out with v2 and then upgraded to v3 and I also have the traffic add on. Since I added traffic to v3 it's started to run very slowly. It takes a long time to start up, the menus run slowly and the updating of the screen is slow - this is a big problem when navigating through a high density of junctions with lots of turns.
I factory reset my PDA and reinstalled TTN3 and Traffic from scratch to no avail. Anyone any ideas why it's not working too well...?
FYI, I also have Checkpoint 3.2 POI warning in there. The PDA is a 400MHz Dell Axim X5 with 64MB RAM and a 1GB SD card and uses the wired GPS.
As far as I can tell I am running the latest TTN3 patches and latest traffic.
Any help appreciated, as I want to go to v5, but don't want to spend the cash if it's still going to run like a dog.

My mate has bought a pocket PC so that he can get e-mail and use it as GPS all in one go.
Has found that it does none of the things he wants it do do well.
Buy a standalone GPS unit, it'll be cheaper in the long run and it'll work properly without conflicting against software.
Oh, and ditch the TomTom and buy a Garmin unit, they're substantialy better from my experience.

Thanks RFUK, though the issue is it has been working brilliantly for almost three years. I'm reluctant to get another unit as it means some more clobber to carry around with me (I already have another portable GPS for my aeroplane). I really want to get what I have back working as it *did* work beautifully. My PDA will slip into the pocket of my jeans it's so slim, I haven't seen any other portable GPS that will.
It might be the case I need to give up the PDA route which is a shame, as it's a useful little unit (I do use it as a PDA not just as a mule for navigation). I'll need a big bag to carry all my portable electronics.
My uncle has a high spec Garmin portable and it doesn't do half what TomTom can yet cost around three times as much - the map updates are also very expensive compared to TomTom IIRC.
Perhaps I'll get a TomTom Go 700. You get all the benefits of TomTom but less of the compatibility hassles. Means more £££'s though compared with a £50 upgrade to TTN5.
I've mailed TT themselves to see if they have an idea (what's the bets they'll tell me to upgrade...? )

Not a daft reply at all thanks for the input. I can confirm the PDA is running a fully charged battery and is powered up via the cradle.
What I have noticed ever since I got TT is that if you soft reset the device, you have to let it fully boot up into TT before you put it back in the cradle else it runs like a dog.

When charging in the cradle the software flies.
Hrm, all interesting stuff thanks guys. Never had issue with the fact it's SD based before, but my Dell does accept CF so maybe that's an option. TBH, I am now looking at getting a newer hi-res PDA (iPaq 4700 any good?) and TTN5.

Have been using TTN5 with a Mitac Mio and 1Gb SD card. I've got the speed camera download but don't use the Traffic add-on. I noticed that if you have POI's turned on it runs quite slowly but I can turn off POI and it speeds up back to normal but it still shows the speed camera warnings even with POI turned off.
