Just tried to update my Tom Tom as I have unlimited map updates

God do they make it difficult, umpteen offers to update cameras etc if I give them more money before I eventually found the correct page.

Then they tell me that as newer maps have so large files my sat nav will not be able to load the newer maps but we can offer a new Tom Tom at a discount. So my unlimited maps are a load of bks.

Just sold my car so hopefully new car will have a sat nav built in as more and more cars are offering these as an option if not a standard fit to the radio.

My Tomtom was so old it couldnt be updated, worked find but started getting stuck, and had to push the reset with a needle, so got a refurbished unit from Halfords, under £100 very pleased with it.

I tried a few others first, but the default to input where you were going was House number, street, and town..........

I did finally figure out how to input a post code first, but what a hassle.

Had the same problem on a hired car, default was House number etc, so used my own Tomton. The hired car was a Renault Captur, took a while to find the cc button, finally found it on the floor between the front seats, what a good place to put it......

The Garmin software for updating maps used to be awful but the newer versions seem quite good, I had only heard good things about the TomTom update tool.
I have received messages that the new maps are too large for the built in memory in my Garmin so I needed to fit an sd card, does TomTom not have an sd card slot?

Why not just use your phone? Google Maps is better than any dedicated device.

Good point, will check later if it has one, but will Tom Tom let me download it? I guess they are struggling to sell new models, market must be saturated and many car have it fitted as standard.

I even use it on cruise, step off ship, save location as “ship” change it to walking so that it lets you walk wrong way down one way street. Switch off. When I need to get back to ship it shows me faster route simples!

Disagree. For one, your sat nav will never need to rely on any mast signal. Google maps is also pretty ineffective if you’re using it to route, if you need height, weight or width considerations. But we all like our own ways, I understand.

I too, had a tom-tom that couldn't be updated. Flogged it on eBay about 4 yrs ago and used Google Maps ever since. Only need it for going to new places to be fair.

All contracts have a certain amount of data included (I always presumed scratchchin) and even a 4 hour use of google Maps on Thursday by me only used 66Mb.

My old one did, my current one doesn’t.

My old one let me put in a card in for Australia and America/Canada, and just a local one for Rome.

And then you realise it's not 2002 any more and we have moved on from such nonsense. :-)

Yes indeed, but very satisfied with refurbished TomTom from Halfords.

Only got the first TomTom when our son moved from Aberdeen to London, I could easily drive from home to the North Circular, but finding a road in London was a different kettle of fish.

Can’t knock sat nav but I still keep an AA road atlas in the car.

Yes, me too, always have crib sheet in front of me if going long distance and keep mental note of where I am in case sat nav goes awol, probably pilot training to keep aware of location despite all the modern nav aids, I can even read a map upside downsmile

On a lighter note had to get a new screen for mine, dropped it in car onto seat runner and took a lump out of the touch screen. Had it fixed by

Sadly 'for life' means the support life of the unit frown

I switched over to the TomTom Go app a few years ago, it does the same thing on your phone - subscription is £15 or £20 a year and you get weekly map updates that only download the changes, so it's a quick process.

Mine sits in a cheap vent mount I bought on Amazon.

Plus you can plug your phone into the car if you have Android Auto or Apple Carplay and have TomTom on the big built in screen instead.

Yup, I learnt that lesson years ago. Particularly when it turned out after much faffing the new maps were too big for the old TomTom.

With the darned things only costing £100 it's better IMO to chuck them away and buy a new one (or list at 99p on ebay) .

Yup, essential. Especially when there's a road closure or some such and the satnav is unable (or unwilling!) to work out an alternative route on its own.

Not needed an atlas in the car since the nineties. Any sat nav worthy of the name can reroute in seconds, compared to faffing about with sheets of paper.

But I got tricked when there was the option for 1 year, 2 year or lifetime updates (being the most expensive option obviously). I paid for lifetime updates but my TomTom became out of date within 2 years i.e. they no longer supported updates.

It's common for GPS device manufacturers to release new models with updated features and larger storage capacity, which can result in older devices not being able to handle the newer software updates. If you have already purchased a new car with built-in navigation, you may not need to update your TomTom device. Additionally, you can check the manufacturer's website or customer support for any possible workaround or solution to the issue.
