Looking at buying a Go Discover, it says it comes with a years subscription for speed camera locations.

I can't find a straight forward answer to this on their website so I'm hoping someone here already has one and can answer for me -

What I want to know is after the free years subscription runs out, do speed camera warnings for fixed location cameras still work? I'm not overly bothered about having constant updates for new cameras or mobile ones, as I've managed with a now 8 year old basic Tomtom for years which only gives warnings for fixed locations and hasn't ever been updated.

I don't fancy buying this new one if after the first 12 months ALL speed camera warnings stop working. Can anyone confirm how this works, does the subscription just cover updates/new locations/mobile cameras, or do you have to constantly subscribe to get any warnings at all?

I have a TomTom Go. The warnings stop unless you subscribe. Map updates are for life of the device though.

Google maps on a smartphone doesn't come with this hassle.

Mt TomTom Go 5000 is a good few years old and I still get the map updates (worldwide) and the speed camera updates.
These were included for "life" when I bought it.
Suppose one day I'll find out how long "life" actually is

Out of interest, why would you spend quite a lot of money on a TomTom when you could get Waze or Google Maps on your phone for free?

I wondered this, especially when you have the likes of Dacia saying why pay for an expensive screen when you already have one in your pocket.

Yet, I'm getting on and like the idea of separate devices doing different tasks hence why I'm tempted by the new Sony Walkman that streams, even though my phone can play music.

The thing is that the new Walkman costs more than my phone did.

Currently trying to figure out this myself as a lot of the cars I'm looking at don't come with navigation. We have a much older TomTom unit in the family (must be mid 2000s or so, or at least older than 2010) but not used it in a while. I was running Google Maps the other day on my phone while passenger but it didn't seem to read out directions sometimes, but I think tapping on the green area at the top makes it speak it (or respeak), but also what appeared to be a right turn on a roundabout on the Google map actually was a straight ahead... I guess you can't go wrong by just counting the exits and making sure you hear that info.

I guess the main reason why people may look at dedicated sat navs as opposed to that on the phone is to not chew up storage space or battery life. I've only just upgraded from a six year old Galaxy S7 which has had a few issues and recently really bad battery drain to a refurb S10 5G. Should be enough to run navigation apps on without too much worry about battery or storage (if I download offline maps as it has 256gb internal). But also I'm someone who puts their phone away and out of reach or view while driving, so a dedicated device may be preferable just for that reason too.

Ideally I would get a head unit that has Apple Car Play or the Android Auto and just connect to that. You can charge the phone in the car. Otherwise you can just connect the phone to the headunit for audio.

Also unless Tom Tom now has live traffic data from users like Waze does, its inferior now anyway.

I probably need to try those apps again as it's been a while but last time I used Maps I wasn't keen on it, maybe it was just my phone being slow but I find the Tomtom much easier to follow, directions are given well in advance as well as showing which lane to be in whereas I've been caught out with Maps in the past where it hasn't said which exit to take until you're already on the round about.

Also, I use the sat nav 99% of the time for work, in several different company vehicles, so a head unit is not an option, and the company covered the cost of my previous sat nav so cost isn't really an issue - except it will be on this newer version if it means you have to pay £30 every year, hence the post.

Waze is very good these days and it does show you what lane to be in for big junctions and on motorways.
