I found a black box under my dash earlier that was made by Telematix. I can’t find anything online about them and was wondering what it actually was for. I imagine it’s an insurance related box or an old tracker. Has anyone here ever seen/heard of them before?

It’s from around 2000, based on the component date codes inside.

Some one had black box car insurance at some point.

How old is your car and is it a more premium makd or model?

It’s a 1999 Honda S2000. They used to be hard to insure, but makes you wonder why you would bother buying a sports car if you had to have a black box hehe

More likely fleet/company owned and tracked. Insurance black boxes are a bit more modern than this.

A fleet S2000?

Most fleet cars have a minium of 5 doors or 5 seats. A 2 seat soft top is not exactly the most practical of fleet vehicles.

I hope it isn’t a tracker, or it might not start…..

Quite interesting inside;

I don’t think it was a fleet car, as it spent most of its life on private plates. That and it’s not an obvious fleet car….

An S2000 is a bit of an unusual fleet/company car. Not impossible, but unlikely. Insurance black boxes were launched back to 1995 by Norwich Union (now Aviva). By the year 2000, loads of insurers were doing them for young drivers.

It is indeed a tracker. Now you've removed it does the car still run?
Ps- current insurance approved black boxes are no more than the size of a matchbox. They're usually glued to the top of the battery..

Not sure yet, as I can’t start it. My cam cover is away for powder coating!

Interesting it says ‘knowledge is power’ on it, and 20 years ago too.
These ISA systems that are about to be mandated on every new car are basically the same, just gather even more info and send it to the ‘authorities’. You have no choice to not have one on a new car from 2024....

Last place I worked you could have whatever you wanted if it was in budget. If it was over budget you could pay the difference on the lease and still have whatever you wanted.

The falcom appears to be a gsm modem with a sim card in the side.

Makes you wonder if it still gets a signal anymore and if anything is listening to it.
