Rear view monitor screen repair/polish?

Has anybody managed to repair a cheap screen that has gone powdery? The one in my van has the top coat lifting which makes it difficult to read in any sort of sunlight. I was going to try and polish it somehow... any advice on what I could use before I ruin it?

I know I can buy a new one, but if I do, I'd rather revamp the whole dash as you can see that the layout isn't the best.
In the not too distant future, I'll probably replace it with a rear view monitor and a separate stereo set up in the back, but I've other priorities for now, so if I can improve what's there...

Okay, solution found.
Looks like I can, cheaply, buy a monitor that will clip over the interior mirror. Didn't know such things existed. Will do the job for now.
