VW Crafter 2008 coolant light

Hi all, I have bought a 2008 VW Crafter to carry out a Campervan conversion. After buying it, on the drive home the coolant light came on. The level of coolant if fine but the same happened again after 5 minutes driving and not going over 40 mph. The float in the tank wasn’t floating so I gave that a prod until it did but then the same happened again. Any advice would be great fully received as my husband is not mechanically minded so I’m doing the conversion. Thanks loads x

Was it yellow or red? Yellow being level warning, red is temperature warning.

If it was yellow - most likely to be the level sensor in the expansion reservoir. Cheap enough to replace.

If it was red - stop driving it before you kill the engine. The cause could be a huge list of things

It was red… turned out I had a crack in the expansion tank as the level kept on going down to half when I topped it up, so got one from AUTODOC and fitted. Problem solved 👍🙏🏻
