TomTom 3 -> 5 & GPS questions

So I'm thinking of springing for the TomTom 5 upgrade as it's pretty cheap and now includes the european maps.
Question: Does anyone know if it works on Pocket PC (i.e. pre 2002)? Version 3 certainly does, but my Jornada 568 (ARM-based) is no longer on their list of tested models. (Pity, TomTom really rattles along on it...)
Another Question: has anyone else here got the magmount wired GPS that TomTom sell? If so, where did you put it? Outside on the roof, or inside on the dash? Mine's on the dash, but as soon as tall buildings are around, its inability to see the rear half of the sky sees it lose its lock. Which is irritating in central London...

you will probably find that your OS is not compatible, plus there are a few known problems with TT5 not detecting your GPS easily.
I gave my brother my old ipaq 3850 with ipaq navigation sleeve, which runs TT3 no problem but he upgraded to TT5 and couldn't get the gps to work, so he is running TT3 again.
I tried TT5 on my XDAIIi, but have reverted back to TT3 until TT5 is more stable on the PPC Phones - although TomTom have just released an upgrade for TT5 for PPC Phone uses, just not got around to trying it yet.
I'd be cheesed off to find that TT5 couldn't find the GPS that TomTom ship in the wired bundle!
Maybe I'll hold off until I can find reports on the web of success... or otherwise. Really would be a major bummer if it doesn't work - not sure I can now get European maps for TT3.
Or maybe I'll see if I can find a hooky version to test with before parting with the cash (I actually think it's worth the money, see...)

I have upgraded TT3 - TT5. I run it on an Ipaq 4150. The only thing I find a bit of a pain is it takes longer to latch onto the sats. The overall feel and look is much nicer with a few nice touches. The magmount is a TT one so that should not be the problem. I have stuck the metal plate at the top centre of the windscreen next to the rear view mirror. I ran the wires under the trim and it looks very neat. I use TT everyday and would not leave home without it. It does what it says on the box.

I upgraded from TTN2 to 5 and I have the Tom Tom magmount wired GPS receiver. All works fine on pocket pc (i-PAQ 3960). 5 is actually much faster on my machine than 2 ever was and it's also more stable/less crashy.
I place the GPS receiver on the left hand side of the dash in the windscreen (against the glass) and use the little black sucker to keep it there. Run the wire under the passenger carpet and up the left hand side of the tranny tunnel to the Cig lighter. Buildings have always affected mine, but it seems to work ok in this location.

My TomTom wired GPS has never been mag mounted, it always sits atop my (plastic) dash with the cable sucker in close proximity holding it to the windscreen. I never cease to be amazed by the sensitivity of it. I can sit in my garage with the door closed and no view of the sky (no windows etc) and still get a 3D fix (4 sats or more). The receiver is so good, I can shove it in the glovebox and still get a 3D fix.
I just wonder if some of you guys have got duff GPS receivers. My original receiver went duff after 12 months or so - almost as if it went out of tune - it would only hang onto a few satellites and took an age to get a lock and would lose it at random. The replacement consistently pulls in between 6 and 11 satellites (I have never had the full 12 channels up yet, that I have noticed) and attains a 3D fix from a factory start in under 60 seconds, hot starts are literally 3-10 seconds to 3D fix.

I have HP Ipaq 2210H and the TomTom Bluetooth GPS (old model). GPS is faultless, I can even leave it stuck in the centre console and it locks on to 8 or 9 sats :-) With Nav 3 it was great but less impressed with Nav5. Nav5 seems to have a serious defect in its left and right directions - nearly every journey the voice says at some point turn left but the map shows a right turn ! or it says keep left when it means take the exit on a motorway - and several times its told me to make a U turn when the map shows go straight ahead at the roundabout ! Complaints to TomTom as usual fall on deaf ears - so I just have to make sure to sneak a quick look at the map for each turn and not rely too much on the voice commands. If the new maps would work with Nav3 id be back using it like a shot. One good thing recently checkpoint now have a new release that works with nav 5 so I have my safety camera stuff back!

did he try various GPS settings ??
if not tell him to try "other cable NMEA GPS", then GPS baud rate "4800" and "iPaq Jacket"(or something similar), find a good spot and leave for a few seconds should start detecting but may take a while to lock on...worked for me after a few hours of messing around with the settings....may be worth a try...

I have pretty much the same setup (different BT GPS only) and I've seen the same quirks in behaviour as you. It seems to run quicker than 3 did and experiences less freezes, though it is a p.i.t.a. to use without the GPS receiver available to connect to. Overall though I'd say a thumbs up for me.

I went from 3 to 5 a couple of months ago (when the update came out). Whilst the mapping is better in 5 there is a slight delay whilst driving which can be annoying. I have cured this to a degree by switiching the poi warning off but it is still not as smooth as v3.
Still a great bit of kit.

Yep - he tried loads of combinations and even left is sat on the roof of his car for a couple of hours, but it still wouldn't pickup any sats. When he reverted back to TT3, it located and locked on within 30 secs. He was on Pendle Hill at the time.....
