I guess this is a bit borderline ICE, but the use case is for when I am driving, so hopefully I can get away with it.

I have an iPhone 12 that is sometimes used in a car with a very basic CD/radio. I use my phone for Google Maps and I would even consider using it for low volume background music and audiobooks.

Ideally, I would like to use the Google Assistant and have that linked to Google Maps. I’d also like Google Assistant to only be listening when a. I am plugged into power and even better b. When I am using Google Maps only.

However, there are some challenges:
-Google Assistant (the version built in to Google Maps) cannot control music (either Spotify or Apple Music) by voice. Not sure why, the option to connect is there and I can use buttons inside the Google Maps app.
- The full Google Assistant seems to be very limited in what it can do on an Apple device, I guess Apple is trying to drive people towards Siri
- Even if I were to move to Apple Maps, there does not seem to be a way to easily limit when Siri is listening. My main concern is battery drain. My old iPhone (a 6) had the option for Siri to listen only when connected to power.

Suggestions? Feels like something that should be easy to get to work, but the politics of Apple and Google, alongside limits to how Siri can be controlled, mean I’m a bit out of options. Aware I can create a shortcut for Siri to launch Google Assistant (“Hey Siri, OK Google”…) but that seems clunky and Siri would need to be listening all the time.

Fitting an Android head unit that will run Google Assistant seems a bit overkill, particularly when I have quite a high specification phone. That said, it might be the only option!
