After reading Techmoan's recommendation of the Aukey dual dashcam and that he'd installed it in his own car I purchased one and then several others for my cars.

Someone on here noted that you could get a hardwire kit for it that plugs into the OBD port and had a motion sensor as well for when the car's parked up, unfortunately these aren't fit for purpose, I've had two fail. Despite this and having one which works perfectly I'd like to get another, but you can't get them anymore, not least that I can see, so I use a power bank connected up to the original USB socket when parked up in public areas.

Can anyone recommend a very long lasting power bank so it's permanently on when parked up in public or an alternative method?

Cheers in advance.

You may wish to consider one of those battery packs designed to jump start cars if size isn't a problem and you want it to last a long time. There are plenty of different ones around on Amazon.

I've used a Anker 20AH powerbank to power a dashcam that was in a garage without power, lasted around a week iirc.

One thing to check is the power draw of the dashcam and disable options such as wifi which will increase the consumption rate, some dashcams draw a lot more than others to the extent that on a cold day you can see the heat given off on the windscreen on some cars.

Some dash cams have a built in heater facility to keep the screen clear of frost, this may be what you saw.

There are suitable kits that plug into an empty fuse slot - Obviously you can pick one that is permanently on or switched.

I presume that's what we have on our Q3, the previous owner installed it but I have no idea where it goes - Was very convenient that it was left behind though.

Thanks for the replies, the Anker one is of interest & good to hear it’ll last a week.

You probably want one with pass through charging

So when your car is running it charges the battery pack and dash cam, when car is off the dash cam is powered by the battery pack

My car will happily power a dash cam for a week, if you use the car frequently it will be fine

Thanks for the reply. Is this what a power magic pro does, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Cheers
