Just been given an NIP - 1 mph over the limit and first time in 30 years. So I need something to warn me of scamera vans, hand held radar guns etc ie something not solely based on location and a database.

What is the best in the market? Do they actually work?

Really??

Can you post up the NIP (with personal details redacted) to prove it?

BTW to answer your question - Waze.

No. But happy to reveal that I was done for 69 in an NSL road where North Yorkshire police say the tolerance is up to 68 mph.

Anyway, what about a suitable gadget.

So 9mph over the limit then

Waze - in the majority of cases someone has reported the camera can before you. I’d guess that maybe once in the last 2 years I’ve been the first to tag one. I don’t drive loads but circa 10k per year so not an insignificant amount

From what I understand the detector are only really any good for telling you your speed has been read - by which point it’s too late. You’d need a jammer to be effective from what I understand

Taking a far bigger risk if you get caught using a jammer. And the new camera vans can detect it being used by the readings they get on screen.

I already have Waze but I cant see a single camera on it nor where to set it to trigger a proximity alarm. Help!

Maybe just stick to the speed limit?

Thats what I like about this forum. Posters are so helpful in answering the question and not the slightest bit pompous and pious!

What on earth you lot are doing on a forum for car enthusiasts, I do not know. Presumably all driving Toyota Prius os similar.

Posts like this always puzzle me a bit - as if it's not possible to be a car enthusiast without driving like a knob.

9mph over the limit is hardly driving like a knob.

But, 9mph over the limit is likely to be 70+ on the speedo so caught bang to rights.

OP, there is nothing legal you can do to stop them getting you with the laser.

As others have said, Waze is your answer. It will also helpfully give you your true GPS speed.

You stated you were caught 1mph over the limit, whereas you were actually 9mph over the limit in a 60.

No one here has suggested they themselves always stick to the speed limit 100% of the time but perhaps either sticking to the limit yourself or within the 10% + 2mph 'rule' to save yourself from further bother.

As suggested Waze can help with this as it shows fairly accurate GPS speed.

I'm equally puzzled how you can be a car enthusiast, other than for say an A35, and drive like Mother Teresa always under the posted limits. The truth of course is that posters on here dont drive like Mother Teresa and arent always under the posted limits. But a number do have a fondness for nit picking, points scoring and general bickering. I often wonder how many posters are indeed of driving age as opposed to school age.

you got caught, stop acting like a big girls blouse and maybe slow down/be more aware so there isn't another thread bhing about everybody who proffers an opinion.

Yup, strange to flout the law and then complain about getting caught.

Round my way there are so many laser vans you rarely see significant speeding on the main roads. Presumably because all the people who used to drive fast have either been nicked or decided to give up.

Guy asks a reasonable question and met with contempt and over zealous moralistic replies.

How brainwashed people have become to speed. Sad sad times.

The contempt is down to the pathetic lie that he was only 1mph over the limit when it was 9mph, rather than the speed itself.

Edit: To answer the original question, I used a Valentine One years ago, but I can't say I found it particularly useful. If I'm driving roads I don't know these days I just use Waze and chill out on the speed a bit.
