Hi team!

I've recently delved into the "cheap" motoring world and bought a 2012 Peugeot 508 allure, 2 litre diesel.

Decent car actually but I really Miss my Apple CarPlay.

The car has Bluetooth phone prep and audio streaming but I'd like to have the centre screen utilised for maps, Spotify etc.and I believe android auto is the route I'd like to go.

Shopping list then... I think I need something like the link below to start:

1. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005001351999870.htm...

2. I have a reasonably up to date one plus 6t that I've been itching to root and have a play with. H's also dual sim if that helps.

3. Supporting hardware.
3.1 GPS antenna?
3.2 fused live feed (with switch for accessory s memory?)
3.3 Mini HDMI cable to phone?
3.4 how do I power the phone continually and use the same port for display?

4. Can I retain the steering wheel controls for volume etc?

I'm hoping someone rocks up now and says "ffs Davie you are over thinking this you knob - this is what you need todo..... "

TLDR - bought a (french) shed, miss creature comforts from much more expensive previous car. Am a tight Scotsman. The end smile

If you buy an Android head unit, there won't actually be a requirement to connect your phone as the head unit will be able to run apps natively. The head unit is unlikely to support Android Auto anyway and Android Auto for phone screens is being discontinued by Google.

What you may need to do is install a sim card in the head unit or use your phone as a WiFi hotspot in order to give the head unit internet connectivity.

Thanks. If I read that right then there’s no point in buying that or on Ali as it’s just a screen that effectively acts as a slave to a phone?

As with all cars these days the head units are pretty much part of the integrated real estate on the dash. I’ll do some more digging shortly but are there units that are replacing the current space? I don’t want to cut the dash to pieces.

This might be overkill as when the car is connected to the phone via Bluetooth it works fine. Just need to find a decent phone mount. The Mac overspray the music anyway.

Now, if retrofitting car play was an option then I’d put more effort into that to gain voice commands from a button on the wheel and for messages to be read out while still fully hands free.

No - the head unit you've linked is basically an Android 10 tablet, in a car stereo, with a custom UI.

It IS the android unit.

You can connect your phone, but it is phone screen mirroring - where the head unit simply shows what you are doing on the phone.

"Android Auto" is different. It's where a head unit supports the connection from your phone, and then runs supported apps on the head unit.

My Skoda Yeti has Android auto. It's a standard head unit, with it's own GPS and radio etc, but when I activate Android auto it gives me a menu with Google sat nav, and other apps that are on my phone and supported by Android auto - like Audible. It is then driven by my phone - but you interact with the head unit.

I can load a route on my phone. Go to the car and connect my phone to Android Auto, and then google maps fires up int he car with that route active, and my phone screen goes fairly dumb and locks you out of most things as it knows you are driving in "Android Auto" mode.

There are two types of head units.

1 - Android head units, like the ones you have linked
2 - Android Auto supporting head units.

They are two different things, though there might be units out there that do both .
