Hello,

The HDD in my CIC unit on my 2012 BMW X5 has failed, its frozen on the menu screen. Ive tried rebooting many times but it looks like the HDD has broke.
I dont think any info can be retrieved off it, so cloning may not be possible.
I can buy a new TOSHIBA HDD 80GB MK8050GAC from amazon for £29 but obviously its not formatted to work.

So the question is, is there any person or companies that can format the new HDD to allow it to work with an E70? can they be coded if i give the VIN?
I found a company in Romania that can supply a new formatted and coded with my VIN HDD for approx 250 euros.

My knowledge of modern electronics is very poor, I struggled to even search for specialists.
Any pointers greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Alan

Looking online the format is specific so you either clone (back up) your drive or replace with a used one.

The formatting is unique. It’s not something you can just connect and format yourself like you would format a drive to something like FAT32.

Used ones are going from about £70 online.

If you like the car and plan to hang on to it then it might be worth swapping over to SSD for a speedier boot time and smoother operation. For example:

Or this:

If the entire drive is not recognised then a clone will not work. However, if it has partially failed you may be able to retrieve the image and use that for a new drive.

Here is some more useful information:

Try to clone it first. If it works you might be able to salvage things. If it’s dead then a replacement is required.

There are plenty of coders out there and specialist independent garages that can code the vin part if you find a used one online.
