Hi folks,
My car was stolen a few weeks ago, relay theft! I now have a new car coming in a few weeks (BMW) and my insurance company are asking me to get a tracker, something which I am inclined to do now anyway. They say it can be any tracker not any specific type/specifications etc.
Question is what tracker would you recommend, should I go with the BMW trackstar? And others which I should consider?

I rent cars, and since the theft of one of them, have been fitting trackers. With 40 odd cars, cost is the most important consideration for me, and we have been using a cheap Chinese model from Ebay. It's very accurate, but the software is a PITA.
In total we are fitting one for circa £20, and costing less than £1 a month to run. When I was checking the commercial offerings, the cheapest I found was no cost hardware, plus £7 a month. (and that was for 40 cars).
The Chinese one can be used to immobilise the car with a bit of wiring - an extra cost with the company offerings.
I don't see much difference in the hardware, but the commercial software is easier to use, but massively more expensive.

The red and black wires are +/- and the orange wire is an output you can use for various immobilisation things.
You'll need a SIM card, and ideally a PAYG one - hard to come by these days. I use a 3 - you have tto top it up, and force it to send you a text every 180 days or something, to remain as an active number. This is the biggest problem of the set up.

If you’re looking for something professionally installed, I’d recommend an S7 or S5 insurance approved tracker like one of these:

It may also get you a discount on your insurance!

GiffGaff do PAYG - as above, need to make a call/send a text every 6 months, but they email to remind you before it runs out, I guess you have to take the SIM out of the tracker, put it in your phone and use it unless you can force the device to send a message. The £10 top up lasts indefinitely apart from your 6 monthly text, don't buy a Goody Bag as they only last a month.Edit - If I order you a SIM we both get £5 free credit Won't change your lifestyle, but it's something for nothing!
