Plugging in a sub cable but not installing a sub?
Discussion
Odd question, I know. I’ll shortly be installing a double din stereo. It’s a big job to take my dashboard apart so I want to only do it once. If I attached the cable to the back of the stereo for a (probably under seat sub) but didn’t use the sub would the headunit get confused or would it ignore the cable until the sub was plugged in? I think it should work fine but better to check To avoid unnecessary work. Cheers
Plugging in a cable is, effectively, just extending the metal contacts on the original plug as far as the new contacts on the other end of the cable, so the HU won't "know" or care that there's a cable there. Do make sure the far end is covered/insulated though - it something were to short circuit across those contacts, the HU could get very upset in a (literal) flash.
I'd just add, make sure you do both the RCA cables and the electric aerial trigger wire (which is what most amplifiers use to switch on), you don't want to do one and not the other
And to echo what defblade said, make sure the other ends are properly insulated and tucked away until you need them!

And label them at the loose end!!!!And to echo what defblade said, make sure the other ends are properly insulated and tucked away until you need them!
I can get in enough trouble while I'm fitting them, let alone tucking them away for a few months first
