I need to buy a sat-nav, could someone please recommend me a good one that i can purchase off somewhere like Amazon. I'm not interested in the phone operated ones like waze, it needs to be a stand alone unit that users can switch between vehicles / plug into fag lighter. Importantly it also needs to be easy to use so a child or woman can operate it. Budget upto £200.

Thanks

Can't really go wrong with any of the TomToms:
  • TomTom Start for £110 (UK maps only)
  • TomTom Go Basic for £120 (5" version, EU maps)
  • TomTom Go Basic for £135 (6" version, EU maps)
  • TomTom Go Essential for £160 (6" version, EU maps)
Only differences between them are the Essential gets an active mount. hands-free calling and can integrate with Siri & Google Now so you don't have to take your hands off the wheel to operate it.

...or any of the Garmins:
  • Drive 52 MT-S for £90 (UK maps, 5")
  • Drive 51 LM for £100 (EU maps, 5")
  • DriveSmart 55 MT-S for £150 (UK maps, 6", bluetooth)
Choice might just be down to which routing/map style you prefer.

Brill, i'll take a look at them thanks. I don't need the EU maps. I just want the easiest to use and most accurate unit.

Cheers

Whichever one you buy make sure it comes with free lifetime maps (with Garmin this is indicated by ‘LM’).
Otherwise you will have extra costs each time you want to update the maps.

That’s good to know, thanks.

In general is Garmin or Tom Tom the best on the market?

Doesn't everyone just use Google maps or waze on smart phone these days

Yes, but if you read the OP, you'll see he specifically nixed this option.
