Install head unit newbie
Discussion
Bought a 2017 Sportage at the weekend, got no sat nav. Would like to get a head unit with Apple car play and possibly a reverse camera.
Local specialist says head unit is £350 plus £200 Labour. Then £200 for a reverse camera fitted.
Thought that was a bit steep. I have absolutely no idea about these things but I can see cheap, decent looking head units on Halfords. Would it be cheaper to ask them about installing one? Or would I, with not much technical proficiency, be able to buy and install one (and a reverse camera)? How do I even know which Halfords ones are compatible? Thanks.

Does your HU also display other metrics about the car? Does it have steering wheel/column controls? If so, you need to make sure that the new HU is compatible if you want to keep everything working.
If the current HU is a standard double din, then it's just a case of removing some trim and screws, remove and unplug HU. New HU is reversal of removal. Reversing camera will need wires run from the HU, so more trim removal and possibly a connection to a Live, depending on the model.
All pretty straightforward if you just take your time. Google should be able to tell you how to remove everything on your car.
I would say though, if it's just for SatNav, you'd better just simply fitting a phone holder and using Waze/CoPilot/Google Maps etc.
