I’m attempting to extend the cable for my dashcam as it won’t reach the fuse box in the rear of the car with the standard length. I’ve stripped down the cables and noticed they’re a different gauge. Is this an issue, the lesser gauge is the original power cable.

Should be fine. They're generally about 5w so shouldn't cause any issue at all. How far are you extending?

Bit late but would've been much easier to buy a hardwire kit that probably had a longer cable anyway.
Even then it's usually easier to extend the 12v part than the 5v part.

2/3 meters extension I’d say.

No such thing existed as far as I know, I spoke to the company directly and even they suggested a custom extension haha.

The 12v part instead? confused

Using a thicker gauge cable is fine - there's less volt drop.

What connector is it? Usually either micro USB or mini USB.

Typically with the camera has a USB input (5v) but is powered from the vehicles electrical input (12v). Somewhere there's a transformer. Extending the wiring before the transformer is easier because it's just regular 12v.

It’s just a micro usb straight into direct fuse box connections.
