Looked at a Golf today and was told by the dealer that it was £250 to activate, anyone know
If that’s correct and would it be the same for Android auto?

Are you sure that was for CarPlay itself and not for the VW own "voice recognition"?

I have a 2017 Golf with CarPlay, bought Jan 2019. Afaik if it has carplay then it should "JustWork" and you don't need the voice command crap.

You can still "talk" to Siri by holding down the voice recognition button on the steering wheel (pressing it briskly will activate the VW one, which if like me, you've not paid for it, will display an error message).

If you ask me it sounds like they're trying to cheat you out of the cost of enabling the voice recognition.

Take it for a test drive, bring your iphone cable and have a play?

edit: and if it does turn out the charge was for voice recognition and not Carplay, take anything else they tell you with a large dose of salt!

Carplay/android auto wasn’t standard until the facelift - 250 is what I paid as you need the activation disc which needs to be ran with the car connected to vw’s systems and some cars need the usb module replacing. App connect is the VW service which enables carplay, Android Auto and mirrorlink
