Hi,

Everything seems so clunky at the moment. I typically use Waze to navigate but that's if the route I'm taking just needs to be the quickest generally.

I did a road trip last September down to Monaco (from Hertfordshire) and I discovered then that I couldn't find any one tool to do the job for me. What I wanted was firstly a site to plan the route (something like google maps/my maps) but then import the map I created into either Waze (couldn't find any way to do it) or to Google Maps so I could navigate using the map I'd created. I just couldn't get anything to work so ended up printing stuff out and using Waze to navigate to each bit. As I said, clunky. It was ok'ish using Google My Maps to plan the route but then I couldn't find any way to import that into Google Maps to navigate on!

Does anyone know of a tool I can use to firstly create the road-trip and then secondly have a way to import that into Google (or something else as good) so I can use it to navigate the whole trip?

cheers guys!

Matt

Mymaps in Google.

You login with your Google account. Add a layer, plan your route by clicking. Once you are happy with it, you can use it as an overlay (and/or export it as a .kmz)?

Yeah, you can create a kmz using MyMaps but where do you import it into to actually navigate? From what I've seen you can't import it into Google Maps to actually navigate and definitely not Waze...

I now use a tomtom mydrive account to create routes. It's a bit clunky, but does allow you to enter the dates you're going which allows routes to be created at this time of year for summer trips although some roads could be closed due to snow. Google Maps doesn't have this.
Once routes are created you can then import them into a tomtom or garmin (which I have) as they are gpx format files.
I use to use motogoloco which was excellent but as it used Google Maps they have a dispute with Google which is still ongoing.

Thanks PG, shame about motogoloco - doesn't look like there's been an update for a while so not overly optimistic but fingers crossed they can sort something out with Google at some point.

It just seems crazy that you can create a route via Google My Maps but can't then import it into Google maps for navigation! smile

Does anyone know what these supercar tours use?

Create route in Google then "share or embed map". You can save that file on your phone home screen, in a WhatsApp group, Google Keep etc.

Create a Whatsapp group for all on tour and save each days maps there, nice and easy access for all group memebers.

I use the Tom Tom Speed Camera app which overlays on top of Google maps and works quite well in Europe.

I use alltrails (website, not app) to plan a route, save as .gpx file to Dropbox.

Download the .gpx file to my phone and open with gpx viewer.

Doesn't do turn-by-turn nav though, just follow the line.

There's also maps.me ( android app) which lets you plot routes by waypoints, and does turn-by-turn nav, but it's clunky to do, and I don't think you can share the routes.

Tyre is a bit hit & miss these days because of the Google map licensing issues.

MyRouteapp is the successor & is V good for creating routes in a multitude of formats.

Yeah, not used it for years. I was clunky back then... plus I don’t even know where my garmin is these days!!

Not used it in a while so dunno if it has the same issues as Tyre, but I used to use ITNConverter to great a route and then save it as an itinerary file on my TomtTom

Myrouteapp to plan the route & then load to TomTom if using the bike's Satnav or use Myrouteapp's Navigation app on the iphone if using that.

I used to use motogoloco and now use www.kurviger.de which is pretty much the same. Use the translation button and you're good to go
