I'm looking at this but wondering if anyone has used this or similar?

Specifically, is it laggy? Or it it like using an iPhone?

I like the idea of using Waze and Spotify, I also do a lot of waiting around so Netflix etc appeals.

Thanks

CarPlay doesn’t allow you to use any app that you please. The app has to be able to operate on CarPlay and apps like Netflix and the catchup TV stuff doesn’t. You would only be able to do it by altering the build on your handset

I very highly doubt you'll get Netflix. You'll get what Carplay allows. I would imagine it's pretty fluid

That's a lot of the appeal gone, but I assume it's sensible not to allow Netflix to work on a screen in a car.

I thought it'd work much in the same way that a double DIN DVD player works where it goes off if the handbrake isn't engaged. I know this was crazy simple to work around but I thought there would be that functionality!

I just rest my phone over the screen and play the sound through the car. Obviously doesn’t work if the car is moving but I don’t want to watch whilst driving.

A bit of research on various forums threw this up;

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000147801480.html

Gets some good reviews and at that price I don't mind taking a punt, at $650 not so much.

What generation iDrive have you got? If you have a later one, you can just purchase it through the official ConnectedDrive store... It used to be the case that it was a subscription, but (if i'm not mistaken) they recently turned it into a one-off purchase.
However, this depends on whether your iDrive system is new enough for it to be done. Could you post a picture of your menu screen?

If its an older iDrive, or for some reason you cannot purchase it through ConnectedDrive, then you'll have to go with the bimmer-tech system that you mentioned, or similar.

I only have experience of the system purchased through ConnectedDrive and that's not laggy.

Netflix doesn't work through carplay as far as I know

You can get some head units that mirror your phone. It will have an HDMI input.
