I’ve just bought a Xtrons Android head unit so I’m wondering whose maps is best to download, I’m guessing Google maps but is there a better alternative? Is it better to buy a pre loaded SD card or download onto the card yourself?

If you have Google maps or Waze, you will need a 4G SIM.

Otherwise something like co-pilot can be downloaded to a memory card

I have ordered a 4G dongle, can I then download straight to a Micro SD card in the navigation slot?

If you already own a phone with 4G data you can enable WiFi tethering to connect to the car Android as long as the head unit has WiFi antenna installed. No need to buy a sim card.

You don't need a micro SD card for the Xtrons unless the internal Ram is low. I run Waze and Tomtom on my car android unit with no SD card.

I used to be a big fan of Waze, however, it hasn't worked properly for me for months now on Android Auto. I've uninstalled, reinstalled and updated and it still wont plan a route properly, I just get a message saying no route found frown I've had to resort to Google Maps.

I use a combination of Google maps and Copilot on my Xtrons head unit. I tether to my phone for online stuff but like that co-pilot can be used offline.
I use co-pilot even when I know where I'm going because of the live traffic bar on the side (with a data connection).

I find tethering simpler (and cheaper) than a 4g dongle as it connects very quickly to my phone

Im using google maps at the moment and im finding it brilliant.
If you go into the settings you can set Offline maps, and then download an area. I.e i downloaded the entire South of the UK and it was about 800mb.

Then just use hotspot on your phone, which will just be used for live traffic info. My iphone indicates google maps is using about 150mb of data a month. And thats driving for 4hrs every day, so its minimal data usage.
